Why play it

Piece by piece, create your own world and survive in this Wild West-inspired survival RPG. Craft, farm, hunt, build your base, and fight in order to stay alive.

Story and worldbuilding

Corpse Creek, 1883. The darkness of the midnight sky was interrupted by bright green light, shortly after flaming stones came raining down on this otherwise quiet town. People stormed out of their homes to see what was going on. The sky was lit brightly green. After a few seconds the first of those meteorites reached the ground with a massive bang. The people who survived the incident took their loved ones to the Corpse Creek graveyard the next day. The bodies are just underground and the local preacher Noah just spoke his last blessing words to end the ceremony when the ground started moving and a hand reached out of one of the graves. People quickly pulled their firearms but weren't able to fight back what was attacking them - their loved ones just raised from their graves, one after another. They are not human anymore, people called them "lost souls".

Above Snakes targets a very specific audience: players looking to slow down, who enjoy patient construction and want to lose themselves in an atmospheric world without feeling pressured. For this group, the game is certainly worth recommending—especially at a discounted price. Those seeking gripping combat, a compelling story, or a genuine challenge, however, would be better served elsewhere. Above Snakes isn't a perfect game, but it is an honest one—and that holds real value in today's gaming landscape.

Above Snakes isn’t a combat or survival game in the traditional sense, but rather a calm and relaxing exploration-and-building experience—ideal for players who prefer a slow, pressure-free pace. However, the weak combat, lack of challenge, and limited content make it unsuitable for those seeking depth or a real sense of adventure. It’s an ambitious first project built on an excellent idea that wasn’t fully realized, but it could serve as a solid foundation for a stronger experience in the future.

Above Snakes isn’t going to redefine survival games, but it doesn’t need to. It offers a charming, occasionally relaxing, sometimes frustrating journey into a frontier world that’s part history, part imagination. The Wild West setting is a breath of fresh air, even if the supernatural twist doesn’t quite land.

An immersive journey with plenty of immersion-breaking flaws, Above Snakes is a survival/crafting game that dares to slow things down, trading adrenaline for atmosphere and complexity for calm…though it may have gone too far. For those tired of dying repeatedly in brutal roguelikes or grinding endlessly in barren sandboxes, this is a welcome alternative. If you’re looking for a chill experience with a unique world-building mechanic, then this is worth trying - especially on sale. If after something that will test your skills, however, this isn’t it.

Above Snakes offers a fresh twist on the survival-crafting genre with its puzzle-like world-building mechanic, engaging resource variety, and appealing visual style. Unfortunately, frustrating inventory limitations, unclear resource requirements, and an uneven sound design hold it back from reaching its full potential. While the concept is strong and runs well technically, the game still needs polish to become as rewarding as its premise suggests.

Personally, I appreciate that Above Snakes isn’t extremely difficult, which gives me the chance to enjoy the game at my own pace—whether it’s building, crafting, or progressing through the story. The game is fast-paced and has a nice visual style. Sometimes you have to search a bit longer for resources, but it’s still a lot of fun. I really enjoyed customizing the map to my liking and creating large lakes or dense forests. The story is interesting, though perhaps a bit drawn out toward the end.
