Why play it

Dragons, witches, trolls... No one can stop Anna. With her telekinesis, unorthodox use of torture instruments, a knack for improvisation and the help of a shady fox she just makes her way. She communes with the dead, shuts off the local taverns beer supply and gets old ladies behind bars... The world of author Dane Krams' debut on the game development stage isn't as cuddly as it may seem. Anna however, is actually perfectly nice - or is she? It all starts with freeing talking teddy bear... Anna's Quest unfolds a hand-drawn, grim tale with a good dash of self-irony.

Story and worldbuilding

In a land far, far away lives a brave young girl called Anna. She lives a peaceful life in the forest with her grandfather, until a mysterious illness befalls him. And so Anna ventures forth to find a cure for him, but this world is a much more dangerous and bizarre place than she'd thought: putting her journey to a sudden end, the witch Winfriede kidnaps Anna to use her for an experiment. Winfriede's experiment is a success – Anna develops telekinetic powers, but this is also where the witch’s schemes are foiled: with the help of Ben, a boy who has been turned into a teddy bear, and new powers she can barely control, Anna manages to escape from her cell. Together with Ben and her new impressive ability Anna is off for an adventure in the haunting world of Grimm's fairy-tales and European folklore. Witches, ghosts, trolls and cursed princesses: no matter if you have to save them or outsmart them – they all play their part in Anna's quest to find a cure for her grandfather. And since there's no rest for the wicked, Winfriede breathes down Anna's neck, eager to reclaim her successful experiment at any cost.

After playing Fire: Ungh’s Quest earlier this year, I was eager to try out another of Daedalic Entertainment’s titles, Anna’s Quest. It is another point-and-click adventure. Will this title build upon the strengths of their previous title? Or will it leave me searching for a different quest next time? Find out in this Rapid Review.

Despite Anna’s Quest not necessarily bringing anything new to the point and click genre, it fully makes up for it in the story, acting, and characterization. You’ll definitely enjoy playing through this title if you like dark fairy tales or stories from the Brothers Grimm. It’s a bittersweet tale of a coming of age story as Anna goes from a timid young girl to a confident and strong young lady. Her journey isn’t easy, but it sure is worth experiencing.

The dialogues are plain and the pace of the story is way too slow, with only a few moments you could actually call funny. The simple graphics do not bring justice to the fairy tale theme of the game, and overall Anna's Quest is far from the level we come to expect from Daedalic.

Certainly an adventure game with a bit of a dark and humorous turn on classic fairy tale tropes isn't bad to work with as a base, and I think that's the greatest strength of Anna's Quest...

Despite boasting a simple and engaging storyline, Anna's Quest can't fully overcome unambitious gameplay and some frustrating design.
