Why play it

A gargantuan rose looms in the night sky, poised to strike at any moment. Enter Yosuke, a combat pilot on an unlikely mission: to take to the stars with the mysterious Hanaco and contain Earth's greatest threat! But will this mismatched duo find common ground in time? And who is Hanaco, really...?

Story and worldbuilding

Approximately 380,000 kilometers from Earth, a monstrous rose blooms just beyond the night sky, its silhouette glowing ominously in the moonlight. No one knows when it will strike again, and its true name and intentions remain unconfirmed. Humans know it only as “Consuelo.” Enter Yosuke Hakone, a combat pilot with Earth's military entrusted with an unlikely mission: to take to the stars in the legendary Battle-SHEEP Sura with his mysterious new copilot Hanaco... and defeat humanity’s greatest threat yet! But with Hanaco’s regressions and Yosuke’s own intergenerational inner demons to overcome, will this mismatched pair get it together in time? And just who is Hanaco, really...? The second in Dento Nanahoshi and Liar-soft's STX-SF series following ALPHA-NIGHTHAWK, this space opera sequel is for the starry-eyed dreamer in all of us–a nostalgic nod to the old adage that what’s essential is invisible to the eye.

I enjoyed the final chapters of Beta-Sixdouze and it certainly added to the lore of the series well, but it felt like a long and tiresome journey to get there at times. It has plenty of good moments sprinkled throughout, but between the technical issues and the moments of tedium, it’s difficult to outright recommend this visual novel. It did feel like somewhat of a letdown, as Alpha-Nighthawk was quite good.

BETA-SIXDOUZE manages to dive deeper into what Nanahoshi Dentou and Liar-soft had in mind in ALPHA-NIGHTHAWK, consolidating STX-SF as a series that's really worth giving a try. Though there are a few negative elements, it's an easy recommendation to anyone who loves a good futuristic story.
