Why play it

Black Myth: Wukong is a 2024 Role-playing (RPG), Adventure, Hack and Slash game rated 8.7/10 from 1.2m ratings, with a main story of about 26h, available on PC (Microsoft Windows), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S.

Black Myth: Wukong is an action role-playing game developed by Game Science, inspired by the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West. Players control the Destined One, a staff-wielding monkey protagonist, through mostly linear levels interspersed with expansive areas. The game features Soulslike elements, a flexible skill system, and boss encounters of varying intensity. It was the first installment in the Black Myth series and is widely regarded as the first AAA game from the Chinese video game industry.

Story and worldbuilding

Following his legendary pilgrimage to the West alongside the Tang Monk, Sun Wukong ascends to Buddhahood but rejects the Celestial Court in favor of his simple life on Mount Huaguo. The Court, grown mistrustful, sends an army led by Erlang Shen to force his submission. During their duel, the binding circlet incapacitates Wukong, and he is sealed in stone, severed from six powerful relics corresponding to his senses. Over the following centuries, the monkeys of the mountain seek to recover these relics and revive their fallen king. The Destined One, one of these monkeys, sets out on a journey across treacherous lands to reclaim the relics. From the fog-shrouded Black Wind Mountain to the barren Yellow Wind Ridge, the frozen peaks of The New West, and the fiery slopes of the Flaming Mountains, the path forward is guarded by powerful yaoguai and ancient figures from Chinese mythology. Old allies of Wukong, including the wayward Zhu Bajie, join the quest as the truth of the Destined One's connection to Sun Wukong slowly comes into focus.

Black Myth: Wukong is an uneven game where the highlights often outnumber the lowlights.

Its dramatic and spectacular boss fights just about keep Black Myth: Wukong afloat, but behind all its glitz and glamour is a frustratingly hollow and rudderless action game.

Despite some frustrations, Black Myth: Wukong feels great and finishes strong – so strong that I've half a mind to give New Game Plus a try, if only to find yet more stuff I missed.

A beautiful action RPG that genuinely delivers a grand odyssey with style, a staff, and a very cool monkey.

It takes time for Black Myth: Wukong's combat to truly click, but when it does, this is one of the most creative action titles on PS5. One after another, its spectacular boss battles steal the show - a procession of memorable encounters that showcase the game's incredible artistry. As a whole, however, the experience is held back by limited level design and frustrating technical issues on PS5 - a damn shame, since Wukong is pure monkey magic at its peak.

Black Myth: Wukong is a beautiful, somber, fascinating tale to experience — you just have to muddle your way through a forest of problems to enjoy it.

A massive success from an up-and-coming studio, Black Myth: Wukong will hold your attention most of the way through with variety in gameplay, storytelling, characters, and level design.
