While aimed at younger gamers, Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axle City Racers is great racing fun for the whole family. In single player or split-screen co-op, the familiar voices and vehicles from the TV show can be played in short and simple races to keep the kids’ attention.

Ultimately, Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axel City Racers is what it is – a simple racing game aimed at young children, with informative loading screens that aim to teach. There’s not much to it, which might make its asking price appear a little steep, but its colourful visuals and basic yet enjoyable gameplay make it a perfect entry point into the racing genre. In the grand scheme of things, however, it doesn’t really impress all that much.

Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axle City Racers is a racer that caters to its young fan base and succeeds with some room for improvement. A few things could have been built on; more diversity in track design and offering more power-ups rather than just one per vehicle. It also seems a missed opportunity that lessons from the show are confined to the load screen rather than incorporating them further into the gameplay. If you know a young one that’s a fan of this show and loves video games then this seems like an ideal gift if you’re struggling for ideas.

Even for a children’s racing game, Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axle City Racers is lacking in subtance and charm. It can and will be enjoyed by them, especially if they like the source material, but between the shallow amount of content and underwhelming performance, you’re better off just skipping a few learning curve steps and letting them play Mario Kart on the easiest settings instead.
