Cake Invaders

I'd say Cake Invaders can be compared to the traditional dessert called quindim: very simple, it's sweet and pleasant during the first bites. The issue is that, when eaten too much, it can be cloying because its excessive simplicity ends up undermining the chance of offering more interesting flavors and textures. In the end, it's a good title for people looking for an easy platinum but it doesn't offer much beyond that.

All that being said, I’ll be the first to admit that for the price point, my expectations with regards to the visuals and modes of play are perhaps unrealistic. Most importantly, Cake Invaders succeeds at providing short and succinct bursts of arcade fun, which is the exact niche you would imagine it was designed to fill. I’ve had a huge amount of fun with Cake Invaders, sitting up late into the night listening to my favorite podcasts and chasing down high scores on the leaderboards. For the price of a cup of coffee, it’s something I would easily recommend to fans of arcade shooters and leaderboard chasers.

For those hungry for “content”, Cake Invaders is going to disappoint you, because it is what it is and absolutely nothing more than that. But for those who remember — or at least appreciate — the good old days of a game having absolutely no shame in simply being a game and nothing else, you’ll have a good time with this one. It’s a great game to have installed on your Switch for when you just fancy a quick blast between more substantial gaming sessions — and in that sense, it fits right in with the rest of Zoo’s excellent library on the platform.

Cake Invaders was a rather fun time, and in the couple of hours I’ve put into it so far, blasting wave after wave of enemies didn’t get as stale as I thought it would. The graphics are cute, the music is just repetitive enough to be annoying, yet forgettable, and the price point is absolutely spot on for the amount of game you are getting. A multiplayer mode would have been nice, but the charm, accessibility, and simplicity of Cake Invaders meant I just wanted to try to beat my own score and is a true guilty pleasure in the making.
