Why play it

Captain Blood is a pirate-themed action game set on the Spanish Main in the 17th century, where you step into the boots of a fearsome pirate on a quest for gold and glory. Expect wild adventures with cannon firing, pistol shooting, swashbuckling sword fights, and plenty of pirate shenanigans. This action-packed hack'n'slash features fierce hand-to-hand combat, hordes of enemies, and a classic fighting system with flashy combos and epic finishers. The game underwent several iterations throughout the 2000s and was last showcased in 2010 before vanishing for years. Now, we are excited to bring it back, combining its original glory with a series of modern improvements for today's gamers.

If you have a burning nostalgia for early 2000s action titles, you might be able to squeeze some semblance of enjoyment from Captain Blood, but even then, you've got to wade through tedious, weightless combat and bafflingly overlooked audio issues.

While the story and soundtrack aren’t something many will consider to be amazing, they are still serviceable and can be enjoyable. There's plenty of fun to be had within the game, and if you’re a fan of the genre looking for a new game to play, this could scratch that itch.

Captain Blood may seem like a nice throwback to hack and slash games of the past, but it really feels like an outdated experience in 2025.

Captain Blood tries to recapture the charm of the PS2's golden era, but unfortunately ends up being a rather mediocre title that misses where it should have hit the mark. There's some merit to its release, partly due to its troubled development, but if you're hoping to find a game that emanates the same energy and does justice to that era, Captain Blood is far from it.

While the experience with this journey has been less than pleasant, I can’t help but be amazed and appreciate that this game finally came out after all of these years of it’s rocky, uncertain development and I respect both SNEG and General Arcade for their efforts. However, while the pulpy tone and charming visuals combined with the style of hack ‘n slash genre of action games that we don’t get too often these days does provide a warm sense of nostalgia, it sadly doesn’t hide the many glaring issues that this damaged ship has inside. The rushed paper-thin story, the lackluster combat, tedious set-pieces (including the ship battles), uninteresting boss battles, frustrating world design at points, terrible sound mixing in the cutscenes and the amount of bugs and glitches that I encountered during my playtime.

Captain Blood starts strong with nostalgic appeal, but repetitive combat and uninspired enemy design drain its potential. A missed opportunity for deeper innovation.

The critical objections I raise here against Captain Blood are by no means trivial, but I’m still giving it a thumbs-up in the end. I’m glad this game hasn’t fallen into oblivion and that we can play it completely legally today. Plus, I really did have fun the whole time. I suspect that those who enjoy action titles from the turn of the sixth and seventh console generations—and don’t mind straightforward, arcade-style beat ’em ups—might feel the same way. If you can only stomach the hack-and-slash genre in its current, “cinematic” form, you can probably let this pirate ship sail right past you.

Captain Blood is a time capsule into the PS2 era of character action brawlers, this time with a pirate theme. While it doesn't excel at everything, at least the great fights are undeniably present.

Captain Blood is a video game that evokes nostalgia. It is not a perfect title, far from it; in fact, today it could be considered a mediocre or even poor game from a technical standpoint. However, for those who grew up with PS2 or Xbox 360 classics, playing it will be like coming home.

A game that should have released 20 years ago, Captain Blood is a generic hack-and-slash that does little to innovate. That said, it certainly has its charms, and there is some fun to be had.
