Chains of Freedom probably isn't going to interest anybody other than big fans of the XCOM-like tactical genre. If you are that person, the combat here is good enough to keep you going until the end, but there's a fairly narrow window of appeal.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with Chains of Freedom. Some players may find the constant struggle for resources in the early game a detriment to the overall experience, but once I got wind of what it was trying to accomplish in this respect and adjusted, things started to pick up.

Chains of Freedom is a great addition to the genre. Plenty of developers dip their toes into this challenging genre. Sadly, many get it horribly wrong. Chains of Freedom does a phenomenal job with practically every element. The gameplay is methodical, tough, and captivating. Moreover, visually it is impressive, and the audio is captivating. As such, I think it’s a great addition to the genre, and you should buy a copy from the Xbox store!

For fans of turn-based tactical games with a dystopian setting, "Chains of Freedom" still offers a worthwhile experience that impresses with its atmosphere, exciting story, and solid gameplay, even if it doesn't set new standards in all areas.

The sins of Chains of Freedom are on a completely different plane: its ending is not a reward, but a long-awaited release from the monotony of life. And the further you progress, the more tedious and lengthy the endless battles become.

When everything clicks, the payoff is real. But getting there involves a lot of filler, frustration, and flat performances. A mildly enjoyable strategy romp, just don’t expect it to break your chains.

Chains of Freedom is a well-rounded tactical-RPG, sporting an excellent turn-based combat system and a surprisingly good story that only shows some hiccups nearing the end of the game. The level of difficulty is quite high, mainly because of the resource management necessary to even reach the later stages, bringing depth and a rising sense of tension to the whole experience.

For what it's worth, Chains of Freedom is not a bad game at all. As a turn-based tactical adventure, it fulfils the brief sufficiently, with the sort of conflict and narrative that is simply par for the course. Being unable to offer anything genuinely new means that you really have to love the premise to see everything through, and at the end of the day, that's not for everyone.
