Why play it

Charade Maniacs is an otome visual novel full of romance, mystery, and adventure. In the near future... Summer break was around the corner. Hiyori Sena, a sophomore in high school, was living a peaceful life. One day, as she was walking home with her childhood friend, a masked figure appeared before them. The two were abducted and taken to a strange world with two moons. When they awoke, they met nine others in the same predicament. In their confusion, the mysterious figure began to speak. "Welcome to Arcadia!" "In this world, if you perform for us, your wildest dreams can come true!" In order to find their way home, the group was forced to work together and act in an assortment of scenes from a drama. They were also made aware that a traitor walked among them... What could be the motive of this traitor? And why are they all being forced to act? Unable to fully trust anyone, who's hand will she take in the end?

Story and worldbuilding

In the near future, in a certain city. With summer break just around the corner, the protagonist Hiyori enjoys a peaceful life as a 2nd-year high school student. But one day as she and her childhood friend are heading home after school a mysterious figure suddenly appears before them and they are taken away to a strange world where two moons exist. She notices nine other people who have been put in the same situation. While they are trying to figure out what is going on a masked man begins to speak. "Welcome to another world, Arcadia!" "In this world, as long as you perform our 'drama', all of your wishes will be granted!" In order to leave this parallel universe and return to the real world, the protagonist and nine others have no choice but to cooperate to take part in this drama as a part of the cast. However, they discover that there is a traitor among the ten of them that were brought to this world. What are the traitor’s aims and the real reason this drama series is even happening in the first place? Swaying between suspicion and trust; at the end whose hand will you choose to take?

Charade Maniacs is a prime example of quantity over quality, but there’s still the occasional good moment to uncover.

While the game offers nine routes for the player to explore, they vary in quality that ends up leaving Charade Maniacs a mixed experience from start to finish. That is not to say the game isn’t worth playing, but if you are someone who plays otome games for the romance aspect, those elements take more of a backseat to the game’s messy overarching story and it’s quantity over quality approach to storytelling.

Overall, I have had a blast reading through Charade Maniacs. The cast is large and varied, but not overwhelming, and the overarching mystery of what the Other World Stream is and why it exists keeps me going back for more. What’s up with the Arcadians? Why specifically wipe out the memory of people who died rather than just kill them? Why was this cast chosen to have such a drastic imbalance between male and female members? If you like mysteries, you can’t really go wrong here.

Charade Manicas is two individually brilliant games that, combined, are the lesser sum of their parts. I can see why the developers would be intrigued by the combination of the otome and death game mystery genres. I can see the commercial appeal too, given what a runaway success the death game genre continues to be. However, despite excellent production values, a great cast, and a well-written mystery, this particular combination chills rather than delights.

I wasn't really feeling the romance elements in Charade Maniacs, though that may have been because I was trying to figure out the meta-story anyway. It's a solid read that I'll probably rip through again in a few months when they actually SLOW DOWN with these games.

Will you give it your all... or will you try to find the traitor to be freed?

In closing, both games could not be any more different to one another really, and it will depend on what you are looking for to determine which will be more worthwhile to experience for yourself. But for my money, Charade Maniacs strikes me as a game that has potential but feels distractingly and disappointingly unfinished with the two routes I have currently experienced, while Jack Jeanne’s overall polish outshines it as well as its depth being apparent from just a single playthrough.

Charade Maniacs is an engaging visual novel with a rather sinister story, but it just doesn't let you make enough decisions while you play.

Charade Manics has some cathartic highs, and I wasn't immune to them: the men, though annoying, are handsome, and the art is eye-catching; the number of routes is also ambitious, and if you're into them, you'll have plenty to enjoy. The songs are also varied and enjoyable to listen to, helping to build the atmosphere, which is another strong point of this experience. Still, the main feeling I associate with this game is "boredom," which somewhat saddens me because of the many ways Charade Maniacs is ambitious: the sheer number of routes, the vastly different story, and the few (but memorable) iconic moments. Overall, I can't really recommend this game easily because of how tiring the experience was for me, but if anything about this story caught your attention, give it a shot.

Would I recommend Charade Maniacs? Yes, I would, but take this with the information that there are plot holes and that the story feels a little rushed. In the end, it didn’t bother me as much, but I can imagine that some people find the plot to be super important. The game does have great qualities, like world-building, and the characters were appealing. For this reason, I would recommend it. But play it at a slower pace
