Why play it

Explore the ever-changing skyline of a city driven by music in City of Beats, a rhythmic rogue-lite shooter. Get into a zen-like flow state during combat, where every action is synced to the beat. Shoot, groove, loot, upgrade, repeat.

Story and worldbuilding

Can you feel the rhythm? It's everywhere in the City of Beats. Music drives absolutely everything in this rogue-lite, twin-stick shooter. Listen to the beat, get into the flow, and unleash bullet hell on the rooftops of the City, blasting through legions of hostile robots. Don't worry about the damage. Humans left a while ago, and it's just us androids up here. Well, androids and robots, controlled by an ornery rogue A.I., the Zeitgeber, trying to impose its own groove on all robo-kind. Someone should do us all a favor and get out there to pull the plug, yeah?

While the musical element may sound like it would enhance play it’s more of an accessory that can’t improve generic shooting play

City of Beats has a lot of genres combined into one, and it may have too much going on for itself. With the game literally stopping you from progressing the way that you want to, it's a little hindering. For the price, you may want to give it a shot. A shot. Like, just one. Don't worry if you lack rhythm, City of Beats does sometimes too.

City of Beats is thoroughly recommended, with its fun gameplay that flows with the music you make. There are a few design decisions that made me raise my eyebrow, but it ultimately is an enjoyable experience.

City of Beats uses musical elements to create a different shooting and action adventure. Dodging and shooting to the rhythm of the soundtrack makes battles immersive, and the high challenge and frantic tempo make the experience electrifying. Other than that, the world oozes style with its electronic music and neon colors. However, the small variety of situations and timid use of rhythmic mechanics prevent the game from standing out. All in all, City of Beats is a passable but unmemorable roguelike.

City of Beats mixes a good set of gameplay mechanics with atmosphere and some great music. Dashing across the rooftops, noticing a sound at the last second that lets you avoid an attack, and striking back at the perfect time, is very fun and engaging. The rogue-lite elements are very familiar and deliver a sense of progression but don’t add much otherwise.

City of Beats cleverly combines elements of roguelike games, twin-stick shooting, and music gameplay. This is a great attempt to mix traditional gameplay elements to create a unique and enjoyable experience that reminds me of the recent game Hi-Fi Rush.
