Clickolding

Clickolding really needed to nail its narrative to be a successful experiment, and it really doesn’t. It’s much too unfocused and far too superficial, never really drilling far into its subject matter. There were a lot of directions that could have been taken, and none of them were. That doesn’t mean that Clickolding doesn’t have value, but it’s not something that needs to be experienced. You could get the same pleasure from just watching.

came away from CLICKOLDING with mixed feelings. The atmosphere of the game excelled in keeping me unsettled, to the point I didn’t care how repetitive the clicking became. That is the whole point of CLICKOLDING, after all. For $3, it is hard to argue against trying the game at that price. The technical problems I encountered left a sour taste in my mouth. While it is certainly playable on the Steam Deck, the lack of accessibility options and settings brings down the experience for me.

Clickolding is a very short game that makes it difficult to hold onto any one individual idea it presents, but in totality creates a singular impression of something that won't let you go for long after you've clicked your final click.

Clickolding is quiet and calm in spite of its unsettling undercurrent. Through straightforward interactions and a lot of clicking, a tone and subject is strongly established. I found it affecting enough to power through moments of monotony that my ADHD really didn’t care for, and I won’t forget that weirdo mask in a while at the very least.

Clickolding isn't a horror game in the same way it isn't a sex game. It really isn't, but Strange Scaffold uses a lot of the same tension-building tactics found in both genres to make its unique experience work. It captures every "un-" and "dis-" adjective in the book. Unsettling. Uncomfortable. Unusual. Unabashed. Disconcerting. Disarming. Dissonant. Discombobulating. And it does so with the power of Strange Scaffold's best elements: writing, atmosphere, and gameplay that aligns beautifully. For lack of a better phrase, it just... clicks. I'm fascinated to see what other people take away from a game like this. Clickolding's mere existence is a testament to, first, the constantly innovative and label-pushing work being done at Strange Scaffold, and second, the kinds of work that might only get the chance to exist and succeed with the support of initiatives like Outersloth. The video games industry needs more from both of these companies, and I'm just grateful to be around to see the weirdest stuff around get the chance to be made.
