Codex Lost

Overall, Codex Lost is a game that’s rough around the edges but has some pretty good content. Considering it’s not a triple A game, it does a lot well. The effort that the devs have put into creating it is clear from the offset. As I’ve said, I will keep going back to it because the premise has me locked in. Unfortunately, I can’t give it more than the Thumb Culture Silver Award as the issues I did face were enough for me to walk away for a bit.

Freemana invites us to become a wizard with Codex Lost, a title that despite its limitations, is enjoyable and offers a different approach to the soulslike genre. However, the seams are visible at key points. An example of this is the lack of polish in the combat system, the lack of character weight, graphics and sounds, the latter being a factor that may cause many players not to give it a chance.

Impressive as a solo developer project, Codex Lost is a vast action RPG that stands out for the most intricately interconnected world design I've seen in a soulslike, a beautiful invitation for fans of exploration guided by curiosity and discovery. The artisanal aspect and the lack of polish in some areas may keep part of the public away, but, despite the limitations, genre enthusiasts will be rewarded with a wizardry experience that is worth getting to know.

Codex Lost brings the magic side of Souls-like games to the forefront. The ability to choose your spells and add variety early on leads to creative combat. However, you get even less guidance than other Souls-like games and it’s not always clear what you must do. That makes this a tough game to get into and a tough game to play.
