Why play it

Choose the next sovereign in this dark fantasy game, featuring card battles and visual novel-like dialogues with multiple endings. Play your cards well, use your skills with care, and move carefully in these turn-based battles, where the weak rely on luck and the Heroes on their talent.

Story and worldbuilding

The kingdom of Meodred's tenuous balance of power is being shaken to its core by a terrible political crisis, while mystical forces appear to be pulling strings from the darkness. Each pretender to the throne is rallying their troops to seize the crown, as the commoners forment a revolt and the tide rises still... At the heart of this turmoil, you play as three novice relic-wielding paladins of the crown forced to make difficult decisions to ensure the kingdom doesn't descend into chaos. Refine your paladins' personalities through dreadful choices along the story and stay true to your own principles. Pick your allies wisely and navigate through rivalries to foil conspiracies. But trust no one: in times of chaos, duplicity reigns supreme.

It's impressive that, considering its mix of two very different genres, Crown Gambit very rarely missteps. Through the ten or so hours I spent with Crown Gambit, there were very few moments were I wasn't completely invested in the fate of Meodred. With fast-paced storytelling and a unique card system, this is a fascinating addition to your tactical combat collection, provided you can survive all that backstabbing.

Crown Gambit has a great political story and tactical gameplay, but it can be dry and has a few bugs that disrupt the experience.

Crown Gambit is a pleasant surprise within the tactical RPG genre. Despite technical limitations—such as simple animations and the lack of Portuguese localization—the game makes up for it with a well-written script, charismatic characters, meaningful choices, and challenging battles. Its card-based system, combined with character progression and the ancestral influence mechanic, adds depth and constant tension. With a striking visual style and an inspired soundtrack, the game stands out for the consistency of its ideas and the way it turns player choices into tangible consequences.
