Why play it

Taito's Darius series began with the titular arcade game, Darius, in 1986 and comprises numerous side-scrolling shooting games released in arcades, many of which were later ported to game consoles. This game is a port of the 2010 arcade game, DariusBurst Another Chronicle EX, including the final update and exclusive new features for this version. It adds the previously omitted Event Mode, with brand new events too, and also includes the Murakumo ship, playable across all modes.

Story and worldbuilding

1904 D.C. (Darius Calendar)— When a Belser virus rent the hyperspace network to tatters, every craft in the human space fleet with a network link was stripped of all communications capabilities. The ensuing chaos saw the entire fleet devastated in the blink of an eye. The Silver Hawk fighters were the only craft from Planet Darius to escape the massacre. Equipped with Burst technology, these two cutting-edge craft were entrusted to humanoid AI terminal Ti2 and test pilot Riga Pratica. Flying the Silver Hawk Burst fighters alone into enemy territory without network support, the two heroes braved overwhelming odds to secure victory and liberation for Darius. It is now 1910 D.C., and repairs on the hyperspace network have begun to reconnect the pockets of humanity scattered across the vast reaches of space. Combat data transmitted from Darius soon sees Burst-equipped Silver Hawk fighters constructed in every inhabited galaxy. The stage is set for mankind’s grand counteroffensive. A team of heroes takes wing, flying into battle and the pages of history.

While there are many questionable choices present, DariusBurst: Another Chronicle EX+ remains an enjoyable shmup.

Dariusburst: Another Chronicle EX+ isn't very suited for handheld gaming on Switch and the game lacks Chronicle Saviours content.

A great port of a great title that's well worth the investment on Switch, on PS4 however unless you are a Darius superfan you'd be better served with a copy of Chronicle Saviours.

Unfortunately, the best way to describe Dariusburst Another Chronicle EX+ is as follows: a console port that feels like it isn’t supposed to be played on console. As a result, it feels like a cheap experience – a rehash of highlights without any thought as to how the package fits together as a whole. Perhaps most egregiously, the medium through which this console version is played appears to be an afterthought at best.

In fact, since this variant focuses on the arcade experience, rather than the original console stuff CS introduced, that means you don’t even have the ability to play 16:9 formatted stages, making the lack of any visual options even more frustrating. Still, with four player co-op, a variety of great ships, and the same great Darius fun to expect from the series, this manages to be a very fun romp for scorechasing and boss rush fanatics, even if it doesn’t have much else for casual players just wanting to reach the credits and call it a day, though it at least leads to being an accessible entry point for co-op action, and is a game I can definitely recommend to people with access to a four-player setup, especially since you can’t really play the arcade game in person here in the US.

"Console remaster of oldschool shmup feels old."

Dariusburst: Another Chronicle Ex + is a solid port of the arcade title. It’s never easy to convert an arcade game of this magnitude onto Switch or TV but the developers have done a decent job in its translation to the home system. It’s also one of the more affordable titles in the series so if you have been wanting to see what all the fuss is about this may be a good game to start with. A great arcade game to enjoy alone, with friends or even on those weekends away fishing. Just try not to cast your Switch into the lake by accident.

Dariusburst: Another Chronicle EX+ may be just an HD port, and still lack a weighty novelty that justifies its release, but it still proves to be a lot of fun and a nice invitation for those who want to know the franchise. The challenge is high without being unfair and being able to play with four other players makes it even more enjoyable. The display layout still plays a bit against those who are very attached to the dimensions of the screen as a whole, but still, if you like a good old Shoot 'em up , this game needs to be in your library.

DariusBurst Another Chronicle EX+ is your basic arcade space game, but with some really cool boss designs. Whilst the difficulty feels exclusionary to more casual gamers, fans of the genre are likely to really enjoy this game, although it may not be worth the hefty price tag.
