Why play it

A single-player first-person shooter and prequel to Doom (2016). Set in the dark medieval world of Argent D'Nur, players control the Doom Slayer in a grounded, weighty combat style that emphasizes strategic engagements over the acrobatic mobility of previous entries. The game introduces a Shield Saw for blocking and parrying, new melee weapons, and drivable vehicles including a cybernetic dragon and a massive mech. The narrative focuses on the Slayer's origin story with expanded cutscenes and character development.

Story and worldbuilding

Long before the demonic invasions of Mars and Earth, the Night Sentinels of Argent D'Nur and their allies the Maykrs wage a desperate war against the forces of Hell, who seek a powerful artifact known as the Heart of Argent. The Doom Slayer, empowered by the Maykrs, is deployed to turn the tide in favor of humanity. However, his master Kreed Maykr suppresses the Slayer's free will through a device called the Tether, keeping him under control as a weapon rather than a warrior. When Hell's commander, Prince Ahzrak, shifts strategy and focuses on locating the Heart rather than confronting the Slayer directly, the balance of the war begins to shift. As betrayals mount and alliances fracture between the Sentinels and the Maykrs, the Slayer must break free of his chains and fight not only the demons but the forces that claim to be his allies.

Doom: The Dark Ages may strip away the mobility focus of Doom Eternal, but replaces it with a very weighty and powerful style of play that is different from anything the series has done before, and still immensely satisfying in its own way.

Doom: The Dark Ages reinvents and reigns in with equal measure, taking the series in a bold new direction without straying from its captivating roots.

Here's a more grounded Doom, but one that's as brisk and playful as ever.

Doom: The Dark Ages is indulgent and deliciously violent, but surprisingly safe.

"Glory Kills have been tossed out, which doesn't help with Doomguy's apparent loss of moxie – now he can't even be bothered to beat a demon to death with its own leg anymore!"

Doom: The Dark Ages is modern Doom executed better than ever. It’s a bloody, challenging, and strategic thrill ride that tested my skills, forced me to catch my breath, and always had me asking for more. With the Shield Saw and other great additions, id Software gives me something I didn’t know I wanted, proving once again that this legendary series can still evolve in ways we haven’t even dreamed of.

This prequel takes a blunt force trauma approach to problem-solving and demon-killing, with a slower pace but more spectacular weaponry

Doom: The Dark Ages gets so much right, that its main flaws come when the game takes you away from its main, excellent combat loop. While not every new addition works, the game’s new open zones are a treat, and the Doomslayer’s arsenal is still incredibly fun to run around with.

Doom The Dark Ages will get your blood pressure up. It will test your reflexes, your problem-solving skills, your aim, and your ability to solve problems on the fly. It’ll probably test your patience a little, too, when the chugging, uninspired, padded-out sections in the middle start to wear a bit thin.

Doom: The Dark Ages is a brutally dark and gory game that sets up the rest of the franchise's story in a captivating and meaningful way. It improves on nearly every aspect of previous entries in the series, setting itself up as a strong 2025 GOTY contender.
