Why play it

Dune: Awakening is a 2025 Adventure, Role-playing (RPG) game rated 7.6/10 from 78k ratings, with a main story of about 100h, available on PC (Microsoft Windows), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S.

Dune: Awakening is an open-world survival MMO set on the desert planet Arrakis. Players create a custom character and must manage thirst, maintain stillsuits, and contend with environmental hazards like sandstorms, extreme heat, and roaming sandworms. The game involves scavenging resources, crafting equipment, building shelters, and competing with other players to harvest and transport spice. As players progress, they advance through phases from basic survival to leading a guild, eventually participating in faction warfare between House Atreides and House Harkonnen. The game features both PvE and PvP zones, with a Deep Desert area that reshapes weekly through Coriolis storms.

Story and worldbuilding

In an alternate timeline where Paul Atreides was never born, Lady Jessica obeys the Bene Gesserit and bears a daughter named Ariste instead of a son. Her loyalty earns her training as a Truthsayer, and she uncovers the betrayal of Dr. Wellington Yueh before it can unfold. House Atreides survives under Duke Leto's leadership but becomes locked in a prolonged War of Assassins against House Harkonnen on the desert planet Arrakis. Meanwhile, the Fremen have vanished following a brutal purge by the Emperor's Sardaukar forces. Into this fractured world, a lone agent working undercover for the Bene Gesserit arrives on Arrakis with a singular mission: find the missing Fremen and awaken the Sleeper. The desert holds its secrets tightly, and the political machinations of the Great Houses threaten anyone caught between them.

Dune: Awakening is a harsh survival game, an intriguing RPG, and a fierce open world PvP game all in one. Somehow, it pulls it off.

An engrossing survival and crafting game with flawed but engaging endgame systems.

If you are a huge fan of Dune, it's going to be easy for you to overlook those issues. If you're not, or just have a passing interest in the lore, you may find it's just too difficult to get into. It's a game that is capable of fantastic moments, marred by irritations and a feeling of bloat that ultimately holds it back from being truly great.

Dune: Awakening's gorgeous environment is full of danger, mystery, and lore to uncover. Although its combat leaves much to be desired, its other aspects make for a fantastic experience that, with some polish, easily sets it apart from the crowd.

Dune: Awakening is a big game. Its wide array of content to explore makes the game a perfect one to boot up with a group, but it’s also entirely playable solo as long as you’re prepared for a slow grind.

Dune: Awakening thrives in atmosphere, worldbuilding, and survival depth, even if its combat and grind somewhat drag behind its setting and systems.

All in all, I really enjoy Dune Awakening. This game introduced me to—and made me love—the survival genre, which is both new and refreshing for me. The quests are varied and engaging, the universe is visually stunning, and the well-thought-out story makes you want to keep going further and further.
