Why play it

Eagle Island Twist is an expansion of Eagle Island. It adds a new story, a new protagonist and forty-five new levels. Explore the avian world of Eagle Island with Quill and one of his loyal owls, Koji. Discover lush forests, treacherous caverns and uncover the ruins of long lost civilizations. Finally, confront the gargantuan deity, Armaura, in a desperate attempt to rescue Ichiro from her clutches. With its falconry-based gameplay within uniquely generated worlds, Eagle Island is set to a beautifully modernized pixel art aesthetic and provides a breath of fresh air to the platforming genre.

Eagle Island Twist is two experiences in one, and both are rather enjoyable, but the Twist levels were the huge highlight for me, being perfect for pick up and play experiences and just pure fun to go through. The main game on the other hand, while fun and sporting a satisfying progression loop with new unlockable abilities, feathers, and stages to traverse, definitely can feel a little repetitive and drawn out at times, and even the randomization elements aren’t enough to keep me too interested in it for long, making it one I just couldn’t click with after a while, especially near the endgame of it.

Eagle Island Twist is a good example of the famous saying "don't judge a book by its cover". Despite appearing to be a cute and simple game at first glance, it is quite challenging and well done both technically and artistically. The pixel art direction demonstrates impressive details, such as the lighting effects on underground scenes and the reflection of some translucent platforms. The title is a treat for fans of platformers.

At the end of the day, it is impressive how Twist attempts to fix all the original game's problems, even if it doesn't quite succeed. If you didn't enjoy the original's roguelike nature, there might be some value here for you, as it is a free update for everyone. Otherwise, if you were on the fence about purchasing the game, there are still far more enjoyable 2D platformers out there that are much easier to recommend.

I'm so impressed with Eagle Island Twist that it made me regret not discovering the original earlier. What a fantastic 2D platformer!

Eagle Island Twist is a fun expansion with a large variety of stages to play through, whether you’re a returning player or new to the title. It delivers in quantity and quality of level designs with added challenges and accessibility for all genre fans to take on. This variety still comes at the cost of a few reused gimmicks, but very little holds this game from being entertaining.
