For a retro inspired shooter, EVERDARK does really well. However, the game could do with turning down the amount of enemies, or improving the stealth mechanics. As it is too easy to be sighted by vampires, and when a swarm is on you, it isn’t easy to take them all down. The level designs are okay, but I wish that I could have really looked around. But due to the issue I just mentioned this wasn’t easily done, with the sewer areas in particular when heading to the church. I think the price is a little steep for the amount of gameplay you get. I mean on the puzzle side, there are only two door puzzles in the whole game. And I wouldn’t say it is all that fact-paced when it comes to the action. I would definitely say it there is some charm to EVERDARK, but nothing that makes it stand out. That and the difficulty spikes might dissuade most people. So I am awarding EVERDARK: Undead Apocalypse, the Thumb Culture Silver Award.

EVERDARK: Undead Apocalypse is a survival shooter with a clear identity and an unmistakable ’80s soul. It doesn’t shine on a technical level or delve too deeply into its narrative, but its gameplay loop is addictive and its B-movie tone works. It’s straightforward, irreverent, and fully aware of what it wants to be. An imperfect first chapter, yes — but one with personality and real room to grow.

Although it lacks polish at times, I enjoyed my time spent shooting and staking vampires to my heart’s content, it has drawbacks but overall it took me a few hours to complete and I had fun throughout, it may not stay too long in the memory, but while playing I was entertained.

Everdark: Undead Apocalypse is a short, direct retro FPS focused on surviving vampires while carefully managing ammo, healing items and resources. It works as a classic tribute, although its limited art direction and small enemy variety reduce its personality.
