Why play it

From the creators of Phantom: Covert Ops, Fracked is the trailblazing new VR action adventure that collides relentless gunfights with free running, skiing, and climbing. Stranded in a remote mountain facility, you play as a reluctant hero forced into a final stand between the planet and a legion of interdimensional enemies. Take aim and run head-first into the action as you shoot, ski, and climb your way across an extreme adventure. Uncompromised, audacious, and stylish, Fracked grabs PS VR by the Moves and delivers an ass kicking VR game enhanced for PS5.

Story and worldbuilding

As a reluctant hero, stuck deep inside a remote mountain facility, you’re forced into a final stand between the planet and the ‘Fracked’ - an army of gun-wielding, interdimensional enemies. There’s no room here for subtlety and stealth, this is bold, brash and uncompromising explosive action. Alone. On the edge. And really fracked off… humanity’s survival is in your hands!

Fracked does a good job of making me feel like an action hero with its wide variety of activities, but the one-note combat can be a drag.

The snappy pacing, not-overly-comedic tone, and engaging run-and-duck shootouts are all high points. I also have to commend the readable art direction, which looks surprisingly crisp for a PlayStation VR game (at least on a PS4 Pro), and the soundtrack, which kept me on my toes and subconsciously nudged me along until I finished Fracked in one sitting.

It doesn’t hurt that the game is designed with a confidence and flair we don’t often see in VR. Absolutely everything down to the menus has a level of swagger that makes for a stunning experience. Cel-shading works well in certain settings, and VR is absolutely one of them: it allows Fracked’s environments to have exponentially more detail and complexity than a similar game without cel-shading, adding much more life to the title's alpine mining facility.

Fracked delivers a solid albeit fairly short, action-packed VR experience with fast-paced combat and visually striking environments. Despite some limitations in its mechanics and immersion, the game's strong sense of style and engaging gameplay make it worth checking out for fans of the genre.

Fracked isn’t a bad game; it actually brought forth one of my favorite cover shooting mechanics I’ve used in a VR game. The mechanics are fine, the initial weapons work, and the enemies can be tough; but beyond the first hour, I was ready for it to introduce something new. We have supernatural interdimensional themes, but no crazy weapons to use or over-the-top enemies to take on. We have this gorgeous art style, but it doesn’t do anything bold with it. There are great ideas here, it just never advances itself and ends up becoming stale.

Fracked is very short with a lack of weapon and enemy variety. But the gunplay in VR is so satisfying.

I'm a huge fan of PSVR because it is the ultimate vehicle for first-person shooters. Fracked transforms the typical first-person shooter by blending adventure and a novel cover system to create an immersive escapade that is incredibly enjoyable regardless of the storyline.

Fracked is a promising cover-and-shoot VR FPS for PS4. If it featured a longer campaign and smoothed-out difficulty then I'd consider it a must-have for the platform. For now, I hope to eventually play a sequel that expands on this very epic formula in such a manner.

Fracked has fun shooting, climbing and skiing mechanics in VR but fails to connect these elements across a disappointingly short game hurt by PSVR exclusivity.

While the length of the game is not excessively long; the combat and immersion make Fracked a must-own for PSVR owners.
