Why play it

Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery is a 2022 Role-playing (RPG), Adventure, Puzzle game rated 8.0/10 from 14 ratings, with a main story of about 3h, available on Mac, Nintendo Switch, PC (Microsoft Windows), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S.

You're a detective, and a frog, and it's time to solve 3 thrilling mysteries! For the first time, all 3 Frog Detective cases are available in one package. Play as the #2 best investigator as you find clues, question silly suspects, and look at things through your magnifying glass. Some nay-sayers have called the magnifying glass "useless", but what do they know? Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery is a family-friendly yet witty take on the detective game genre. Solve the mysteries on your own, or play along with friends as you take turns reading out the dialogue. Think you can crack the case?

Story and worldbuilding

In Case 1, The Haunted Island, a sloth has been haunted for weeks by a mysterious ghost that nobody can seem to track down. Even after hiring a team of ghost scientists, the mystery is no closer to being solved. Luckily for this tropical sloth, and unluckily for this pesky ghost, Frog Detective is here to crack the case! The Haunted Island is the first in this award-winning series, and this bite-sized mystery is what started an international cult obsession with the world of Frog Detective. In the second mystery, The Case of the Invisible Wizard, we follow the Detective to Warlock Woods, where a celebratory parade for their newest neighbour has been maliciously destroyed. Now the neighbour is nowhere to be seen, and the town is in ruin. Can Frog Detective get to the bottom of things? We sure hope so, otherwise the game would be a bummer. In the exciting series finale, Corruption at Cowboy County, The Detective and Lobster Cop are tasked to solve the conundrum of a sheriff-less town. But not all is as it seems here, when a surprisingly simple solution to the case reveals a sinister scheme. Maybe crime is real after all... This final mystery is jam-packed with twists and turns, a true love letter to the Frog Detective fans.

Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery is a short but very sweet trilogy. It's thoroughly silly, but manages to tell an earnest story as you enjoy its brilliant dialogue, great soundtrack, and endearing cast of characters. There's little replay value and the gameplay is minimal, but it'll win you over with real warmth, humour, and positivity.

While Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery is far from perfect, I found that after spending an afternoon with it, I could hardly wipe the smile off my face. If you’re interested at all, I would highly recommend getting the whole package and not just trying to play one case at a time.  Despite how Frog Detective feels in the beginning, the mysteries do build off one another and get better the deeper you go. By the time you hit the grand finale, the slow start will be a distant memory and the payoff will be well worth it!

This was such an unexpected treat. I adore reading in games, even though that feels counterintuitive to the point of video games. Being swept up in visual novels is a passion of mine, so I love when I can get that safe effect elsewhere. Frog Detective is such a silly and genuinely funny read from start to finish that I didn’t even mind that it was in the first person perspective. It’s like Inspector Clouseau and Detective Drebin taught a frog everything they knew and sent him off into the world.

In the absence of meaningful stakes, Frog Detective's trading sequence mechanics might seem shallow and its detective work may feel basic, but perhaps that's deliberate? In focusing on whimsy and charm above all else, Frog Detective is allowed to just be funny and daft on its own merits, and that's where it shines.

Frog Detective: The Entire Mystery aims to entertain and make you laugh in a light and silly way, with no intention of surprising or challenging with its investigation mechanics. The focus is all on the absurd narrative, really funny for those who like this type of naive comedy with eccentric characters, which should especially appeal to children. The package compiles the three cases and brings a scooter minigame that can be fun for a while, but not much. The new feature of the console version is the Brazilian Portuguese localization, present on all platforms.

The Frog Detective Trilogy is a joyous and silly collection of games, that are the perfect palette cleanser after playing something serious.

This succinct and sweet little bundle of short-form adventures is just irresistibly charming and wholesome and pleasant in a way that few games are, making it a refreshing and terribly timely bit of reprieve from the onslaught of very good but very intense releases in 2023, and just this year’s whole deal in general. That each game is capped off by a dance party inclusive of everyone Frog Detective meets is an inspiring glimpse into the incredible communities we could be nourishing with just a few more folks as decent as he.
