Story and worldbuilding

Thanks to the efforts of Copen, the "Luminous Avenger iX," the world is finally at peace. It was during these peaceful times that Copen threw himself into his research. Some time after his battles ended, Copen found himself in possession of a mysterious, rifle-shaped piece of tech called a "Blaster Rifle." Copen immediately began work on repairing and studying the device. While Copen was deep in the midst of his work, a wormhole suddenly appeared before him and drew him in. The next thing he knew, Copen found himself in an unfamiliar place - a desert world where only mechanical beings known as "Workers" lived. Copen, along with Lola and Kohaku who were sent there along with him, must search for a way home. They have the help of a Worker girl, Null, who leads them to a giant tower known as the "Grave Pillar" where the world's secrets are said to lie. This is where their story begins...

A hallmark of excellence. There may be flaws, but they are negligible and won't cause massive damage.

Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 is far from a groundbreaking game, but it certainly is an enjoyable one. The tightly designed levels and snappy controls make for a thoroughly enjoyable action side-scrolling experience, though this comes with the major caveat that the whole experience is really only a few hours long and it's very much more of the same. At any rate, we'd give this one a strong recommendation to any fans of the Gunvolt series or run-and-gun games in general; there may not be much of it, but Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 absolutely nails what it sets out to do.

Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 does not represent any major departures compared to its predecessor, and if that may sound negative it's also not necessarily harmful - after all, the gameplay mechanics remain fun and well executed, the boss fights are very challenging, and the game's presentation is a marvel to look at. The plot is without a doubt the game's biggest flaw, and even though action-platformers are usually given a pass when it comes to the plot, it would be good in this case if the story could feature less often. With all that said, Luminous Avenger iX 2 is great fun and fans of both the original and the Mega Man X series will find plenty to enjoy here.

Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 does so much right. It’s gorgeous, it’s fun, and it sounds awesome. It has a lot to offer for fans of classic 2D action platformers with engagement to be found in both its story and gameplay. Not without its faults, Luminous Avenger iX 2 hides its true ending behind an overly punishing hard mode and hides fun mechanics behind a DLC paywall which leaves a sour taste in the mouth. Though with that said, the game still manages to be a funhouse of bullets and chainsaws.

The second part offers us a special level and reintroduces a number of elements that impressed us with the first part, this part introduced some changes that restricted some aspects of the game and made the experience less dynamic, a decision that not everyone will like.

A polished game with sharp gameplay means most who take it on will have a good time, even if the feelings of brevity may detract for some, and tweaks to difficulty could have further improved the overall package.

Presented as the new Apex of 2D action, Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 is a really high quality work in the genre. Though its initially lower difficulty and infinite healing system may annoy a few veterans, it's a game that offers frantic action and allows any kind of player to enjoy its beautiful stages in their own way. It's an instant classic.

Ultimately, Luminous Avenger iX 2 is an attractive and challenging action platformer that nevertheless fails to learn key lessons from the previous game. That said, if you’re a fan of the Gunvolt series or a platformer enthusiast, this is very much your game. If you’re not in that camp, you might wanna skip this confusing side adventure.

While there's nothing particularly meaty or mindblowing about the experience and it's very easy, Luminous Avenger iX 2 is another enjoyable entry in the series.
