Why play it

Hell Pie is a 2022 Platform, Adventure game rated 9.0/10 from 1.8k ratings, with a main story of about 12h, available on Nintendo Switch, PC (Microsoft Windows), PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S.

Hell Pie is a single player 3D-Platformer which empowers the player with an extensive set of moves based on a swing mechanic and lets him explore a combination of twisted large worlds and small challenging levels. Fighting against enemies, collecting weird cake ingredients and interactions with bizarre characters complement the gameplay. Our target audience are fans of old-school Action-Adventures and gamers who loved to play N64 classics such as Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie. Right now the game is in production and will be released in the 3rd quarter of 2020.

Story and worldbuilding

The game sees you grab the horns of Nate, the ‘Demon of Bad Taste’. He is given the honorable task of gathering the disgusting ingredients for Satan’s infamous birthday pie. To do so, Nate must venture out into the overworld and do whatever it takes to ensure those ingredients are secured in time, or there’ll be hell to pay! Luckily Nate isn’t alone on this quest, his ‘pet’ angel Nugget is there to offer support. Nugget offers his holy insight when needed, but more importantly is chained to Nate, so can be used like a grappling hook or swung around as a weapon. Nate can also equip horns he finds across the world to give him new hellish abilities. Together Nate and Nugget will explore insane environments, meet tons of repugnant characters and witness some truly shocking sights. Hell Pie is a seriously twisted take on the classic mascot platformer, come along for the ride if you think you can stomach it!

Hell Pie manages to be one of those games in which the theme, humour and gameplay are consistent from start to finish. I never tired of the sarcastic comments from the NPCs, or Nugget’s daft commentary throughout the 17 hours it took to complete the platformer. It’s a shame that technical issues plague Hell Pie, with the primary culprit being the camera. Still, even with those issues, I’ve not experienced such a succinct platformer in a long while. There was not one point in Hell Pie where I felt the game suddenly jutted out of line, gave you too much to do, or fell flat in the comedy department. Even in the later levels, like when Nate and Nugget found themselves at the Pearly Gates, the platformer still felt the same game as when I first tapped the Cross button to begin the adventure.

Nate is the Demon of Bad Taste and as it is 'one of the most horrific deadly sins' (for like two people in the world), he is summoned by the very Satan, to collect all the necessary ingredients for his birthday pie. Hence the confusingly hilarious name that perfectly summarizes the plot of Hell Pie. This disgustingly wonderful 3D platforming adventure will not only make you search unique worlds to complete Devils shopping list, but it will most definitely make you gag too, laugh out loud quite a lot, and also offer a hellish kind of challenge.

Hell Pie has the beginnings of an entertaining game with a silly sense of humour and classic platformer action, which has sadly been scuppered on the Switch by a glitch that crashes the game as soon as you hit the second level.

Incredibly enjoyable locomotion abilities, pleasant collectibles to find, and fun (albeit simple) platforming puzzles are all that await those that are willing to look past Hell Pie's grotesque themes of animal abuse, drug use, and religious tones.

Hell Pie clearly isn't for everybody, but if you're the sort of person who loves pushing boundaries -- and your definition of boundaries hasn't changed much since you were in high school -- then it might just be the game for you.

It says a lot about the quality of the underlying game design that I kept coming back despite regularly running into issues. I'd love to speak more positively about Hell Pie, and I may very well wind up picking it up on another platform, but the compromises on Switch are going to be too much for most players. I sincerely hope this port can be salvaged through updates because I firmly believe Hell Pie is a very good game, and this version just doesn't do it justice.

While it has a certain gross-out appeal and offers fun, some more mechanical issues hold it back a bit

Hell Pie is a vile and crude 3D platformer that will make you laugh. With many well-trodden mechanics and interesting levels to explore, this will keep you busy. If you love your collectables, then this is the game for you!

Hell Pie does a decent job of combining Conker's Bad Fur Day and Whiplash but it's certainly not as enjoyable as either of them.

I was expecting some smarter jokes, not the same dick jokes I’ve heard since sixth grade.
