After spending several hours playing Hyper Light Breaker, overall, It left the player feeling more annoyed than having fun. Although upgrades throughout its early access phase could help it to improve, as it stands, it is difficult to advise. At the time of drafting the review, developers delivered a patch that came with several enhancements to performance, visuals and controls, Steam Deck compatibility, and the squashing of major issues. Perhaps you can give Hyper Light Breaker a go if you’ve liked Hyper Light Drifter, since the devs are actively working on fixing the issues.

Hyper Light Breaker is ambitious. It’s the first time Heart Machine is creating a multiplayer game and their unique approach to the rogue-lite genre is worth tracking. However, if they waited a little longer, and added more content, this early access launch would not have been so rough.

Hyper Light Breaker is a fascinating idea. A title that combines genres in a way that I personally have never seen before but that conceptually can create an intriguing experience. Unfortunately it is also a poorly balanced game that needed much more time in the oven, even just to release in early access! If you want to support Heart Machine, it may be worth buying, the team is talented and has already proven it, however be prepared for a rather traumatic first impact with this world. Time will tell if they can turn this first iteration of the title into something special.

Hyper Light Breaker presents a unique concept by mixing roguelite elements with open world exploration, offering fast combat and diversified customization in a dynamic universe. Despite that, the title faces significant challenges in its early access when it comes to content variety, balancing issues, and a technical experience that still needs refinement. In sum, Hyper Light Breaker's base is promising and, if the problems are fixed, it may become a compelling and remarkable experience. For those ready to explore its developing ideas and to contribute to its evolution, the title offers a glimpse at a universe that, with time and dedication, may become truly unique.

Hyper Light Breaker is a bold and ambitious evolution of the Hyper Light franchise, but it struggles to fully realize its potential. While the transition to 3D and the addition of online co-op are commendable, the game’s reliance on procedural generation and its punishing difficulty curve make it a less accessible and memorable experience than its predecessor. For fans of Hyper Light Drifter, Breaker offers a glimpse into the franchise’s future, but it also serves as a reminder of what made the original so special. Whether Heart Machine can refine Breaker into a worthy successor remains to be seen, but for now, it’s a shaky yet promising step forward.

Hyper Light Breaker is in its infancy of Early Access. Heart Machine has plenty of time to iterate and turn this into a great game, and they’ve already acknowledged the flood of player complaints and vowed to quickly release patches. I am concerned, though, that even as performance is improved and new content is added, they might never manage to refine the gameplay loop to the point of actually being fun.
