Despite some disappointing and frustrating moments, there’s enough compelling stuff that I can still recommend In Sound Mind to fans of adventure-leaning indie horror games. Overall, I dug this team’s ambition, and I was excited to see where it was headed. I just wish the game ran better and streamlined some of its level and puzzle design.

In Sound Mind features plenty of unnecessary and frustrating mechanics, but a complex, entertaining story and the deft application of classic and psychological horror tropes help carry the game.

In Sound Mind is a surprisingly compelling title, offering an interesting story and strong horror experience. However, some aspects start to outlive their welcome - if only due to annoyance. Tackling a sensitive subject like mental health, In Sound Mind could have really fallen flat if We Create Stuff didn't handle it well, and while it can come across as heavy-handed at times, this is generally well done and worth experiencing.

In Sound Mind is a well-crafted psychological horror experience. If you are a fan of psychological horror and seek a game that truly challenges the mind, In Sound Mind is undoubtedly worth your time. This is precisely what it excels at—provoking thoughtful reflection. Personally, after completing it during a significant period of my life, I felt the need to put down the controller and take a moment for myself to contemplate how profoundly and intricately this game managed to touch upon deep, complex chords to ultimately reveal a fundamental truth. Only those who, like Desmond’s patients, have found themselves lost in an abyss with no apparent escape can truly understand how essential a psychological journey is to grasp this: sometimes, the source of our torment lies within ourselves.

In Sound Mind is a light horror game with an excellent atmosphere, which is enhanced primarily by its sound design. The originality of the setting and the interesting gameplay mechanics also stand out. As for the downsides, I’d mainly point to the poorly implemented stealth mode—it didn’t turn out very well. Ultimately, though, In Sound Mind is definitely worth buying, because when it’s on sale, you get a lot of great music for very little money. Literally.

In Sound Mind managed to disprove our initial impressions and finally turned out to be a game worth devoting some of your evenings to, always in a dark room with headphones on to completely isolate yourself from the real world.

Rarely can you sit down with a horror game and watch it start out in one genre, jump to another, lounge in a third and then land with an amazing flourish. Even if you’re not a fan of “scary” games, give this one a chance. Step through the door and brave the mystery of Milton Haven.

In Sound Mind is quite an average title. It contains a lot of interesting and entertaining parts, but it's also really rough around the edges. By no means is it a horror or the smoothest gaming experience, but if you're looking for something that will give you a new perspective on classic indie horror games, you've come to the right place.
