Why play it

From hit writer Ryukishi07, the creator of When They Cry, comes a story on the theme of “curses.” Strike down the dark riddle of dolls and soot in this supernatural horror visual novel.

Story and worldbuilding

Hajakenshou. Crush evil, spread the truth. It is said that each generation, upon reaching a certain age, all boys of the Susuharai family leave home and become independent. Then, relying only on themselves, they train body and soul until they are accepted as adults. And so I prepared myself for this day, learning a great many things so I'd be ready to live on my own. Susuda Prefectoral High School. My new school. Originally, I planned to enter in first year rather than transfer in second year. Life at school is carefree, and even pleasant. Everyone has a great time in class 2-A. There's just... her, Toe Kurokami. "Weird" doesn't begin to describe her. Always holding that Japanese doll against her chest, never letting go for a second. Some whisper it is a cursed doll, whose hair grows when no one is looking. But it's just an uncanny doll, with nothing special about it. Yet, perhaps my meeting that girl was fate... No, it was fate.

Iwaihime is an excellent visual novel that develops an interesting and intense supernatural mystery. Though the horror is diminished over time and some serious topics aren't handled with care at a few moments, understanding the curse and how it affects the characters becomes an engrossing narrative over time and makes it a strong emotional experience until the end.

Iwaihime plays the long con with its narrative and convinces readers that it’s not the unique horror thriller they were promised. However, that all changes when it shows its hand, and you are taken through some gripping story scenarios that will send several chills up your spine. This worked well with the game’s presentation, aesthetic, and blend of romance and horror. I couldn’t recommend this more.

It may not be as good as Higurashi and the like, but it’s a decent enough horror VN all things considered and a good read during Spooktober. The base story is interesting, but it does take a while for things to really get going and the writing is definitely not without its issues. The art and music are good though, so I would say it comes down to how into the horror genre you are on whether or not to pick this one up.
