Jenny LeClue: Detectivu

A visually stunning game, belying its origins as a creation of two animators, alongside some delightful writing, weaving a complexity of narrative that completely surprised me. But one that offers the player far too little actual investigating, and in the end, far too much tiresome wandering.

Adventure game Jenny LeClue – Detectivu was successfully funded via crowdfunding in 2014. The campaign was managed on Kickstarter with an original goal of $65,000. By the end of the campaign, developer – Mografi had raised a staggering $105,797, and so Jenny LeClue was born.

If you’re looking to take a chance on a good adventure indie, with an entertaining story, Jenny LeClue offers a generously sized campaign full of twists and turns and clever gameplay hooks that you’ll really struggle to put down. I just hope this isn’t the last we see of this intrepid investigator. Fortunately, if the end of the game is anything to go by, it certainly seems like I’ll get my wish.

The charming protagonist is crushed under the weight of a lack of challenge, and seer boredom. First of all, this isn't an adventure game, but an interactive novel - albeit a very good one, but it has a mind-numbingly slow, artificially padded pace that it's hard to recommend it to anyone who expects good gameplay.

Jenny LeClue – Detectivu is one of the best adventure games I’ve played on the Switch since buying one. The beautiful visuals, brilliant voice acting, thrilling and mysterious story, and intuitive gameplay all combine to create an experience you’ll instantly become hooked to and unable to put down. Although this is only part one of two, it doesn’t feel like anything was cut or removed – it tells the story it set out to tell and builds up your excitement and hype for the next episode. If you’re a fan of adventure games, either the modern Telltale style or old-school point-and-click ones, you should certainly check out Jenny LeClue – Detectivu today. It’s a funny, mysterious, spooky, and heartwarming adventure you’ll never forget.

An adventure without the boring bits, Jenny LeClue: Detectivú is a sensational game that is well worth playing; just don't expect to solve the case of the missing ending.

A consistently intriguing story, varied yet approachable gameplay, and surprisingly nuanced characters set this detective story apart from the pack.

Exceptional presentation elements bolster excellent voice acting and writing, and the result is a mystery experience that is both accessible and hard to put down. The puzzle quality could be a little higher and the game did freeze a couple times (autosaves are frequent, fortunately), but the memorable characters will definitely stick with you after you close the book on this one. Like a good novel, Jenny's (and Arthur's) story is a real page-turner, and it's well deserving of being added to your Switch library.
