Why play it

Seal the Gate Of Doom forever! Gate of Doom is a classic arcade multiplayer action RPG originally released in 1990. You and a friend take on the role of one of four heroes of prophecy, the knight Carl F. Graystone, the wizard Fraya Edirne, the bard Riger Hawk, or the ninja Kirikaze.

Story and worldbuilding

According to an ancient legend of the Kingdom of Etrulia, should the people get corrupted by wickedness, demons and devils would break through the Gate of Doom, ruling the land as their own. However, by the same time four heroes with different powers would be summoned by the Force Divine to destroy the monsters of darkness and using the magic gem and magic crown they would try to lock the Gate of Doom forever.

Overlooking the association with the questionable Johnny Turbo brand, Gate of Doom isn't all that bad, even if it's a long way from being a solid-gold classic. It certainly isn't on par with competitors from this particular era, but it at least manages to provide the essentials that make brawlers like this fun for one or two people for a short period.

From its goofy retro fantasy setting to its unique magic system; Gate Of Doom is a solid arcade gem that's worth checking out.

Gate of Doom is a fun button masher on Nintendo Switch that you'll certainly enjoy. As is to be expected of an arcade game from over 25 years ago, you're looking at playing for around 40-60 minutes or to be able to beat this mystical adventure. And since the game is a button-mashing fun adventure, once you've beaten it you can do it all over again with a different character, or even invite a friend to join you for some local co-op as you both take on the many monsters and bosses in your path.

There was potential in Gate of Doom. I almost want to go back and play it again now, but when I remember how frustrating it is, seemingly designed to kill me as many times as possible, I decide against doing so.

I can safely say that this Johnny Turbo Arcade port is very solid, and brings the game home for what appears to be the first time ever! It may not have the online features of the Arcade Archives series, and the features of the emulator could use a bit of work for future installments, the core game is still a lot of fun with friends, even if it’s standard as far as arcade games go.
