Disappointing is the word that perfectly describes Kvark, the very enjoyable Soviet-flavoured FPS that’s like the less charismatic offspring of Half-Life and Hrot. Sadly, it has numerous problems, and while some, like its linear structure and repetitive gameplay, are easy to accept due to its deeply atmospheric world and enjoyable combat and exploration, there’s an irritating lack of polish, making it a hard recommendation to anyone but those few passionate indie game aficionados that can appreciate a hidden gem even if it happens to be placed inside a rusted, stinky, cracked box. Again, disappointing.

Kvark recreates the spirit of 90s gaming with a contemporary twist, without shying away from its difficulty or chaos. What it offers is not only a tribute to classic games, but also a standalone experience with its own unique flavor. The world design, reliance on exploration, and brutal combat provide players with a fun challenge.

Kvark is something special. It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel, but it doesn’t need to. What it does do is deliver a tightly crafted, highly atmospheric shooter dripping with personality. The blend of retro-futurism, Cold War paranoia, and sci-fi horror is executed with love and precision. It’s creepy, it’s punchy, it’s stylish, and above all — it’s fun.

Kvark is an old-school shooter that pays homage to Half-Life, but doesn't bring anything new to the genre. While it successfully captures the aesthetics and design quirks of turn-of-millennium games, its low-resolution textures, clunky enemy models, and frustrating gameplay mechanics make it feel outdated rather than nostalgic. The story unfolds through diary entries, posters and videos with a touch of Slavic sarcasm, but ultimately, the repetitive action and rigid save system remind players why modern shooters have evolved past these limitations.

Clearly inspired by the Half-Life series, Kvark is a great FPS with a perfect old school feel; fairly balanced, interesting story, creepy ambiance. There’s also a decent variety of weapons to pick up and have fun with. It is also surprisingly lenghty and there’s quite a bit of areas to explore. However it does become a bit annoying constantly seeing the same enemies over and over; and the trailway section kinda slows the game down a bit. If you’re looking something substantial that feels different than common FPS, Kvark is a must-play; whether you’re an old veteran FPS player or tempted to dive into the genre.

Kvark is an incredibly well-done title in its setting, theme, and gameplay, but does it have its flaws and fail to live up to the potential of its setting? Of course, it doesn't matter anyway. The title has its positives, and considering that this is the first title from two young developers who only graduated from high school last year, it's an incredible piece of work that deserves its own recognition and recommendation to anyone who enjoys retro pixelated boomer shooter games.

Kvark has its quirks but overall, it feels great. The controls are responsive and basic shooting mechanics ensure that the controls are never failing you in any situation. Judging from the state of today’s AAA releases, this has sort of become a rather novelty in video games. Kvark presents an interesting environment for you to explore while using good shooting mechanics to ensure that your enemies do not stay longer in front of your barrel. It is a little hard if you are used to modern shooters with plenty of save locations but once you get adjusted to managing your health and ammo, this is a surprisingly fun shooter to keep you busy for a decent amount of hours. If you love playing shooters inspired by Half-Life, you must dive into Kvark because it is a great shooter. Highly recommended for players looking for a shooter with good mechanics and a decent environment.
