All told, Lode Runner Legacy is the sort of game that fails to impress, but does enough things right to be properly satisfying. Even though the levels can feel rather stale after a while and the presentation is underwhelming, there's a huge amount of content on offer and the creative suite adds a meaningful dimension to the overall package. We'd give this game a recommendation, particularly for fans of puzzle games. Lode Runner Legacy is certainly not a must-buy, but it also won't be disappointing if you do opt to take the plunge.

Lode Runner Legacy is a must-have game for both those new to the series as well as for fans of the long-running series. The game offers a ton of levels split in different modes, and being able to create your own stages, as well as play those created by players around the world, make this a must-buy game on Nintendo Switch.

The included content in Lode Runner Legacy is fairly straightforward, but the online level sharing gives new life to the series. If you enjoy the Lode Runner series, this entry is well worth it just for the user-generated content.

Lode Runner Legacy is loaded with content and open freedom for individuals to dabble into their creative sides with little restrictions. Puzzles increase in difficulty as you progress through the levels and the gameplay does still hold up after 35 years, but the gameplay is where I can see gamers getting turned off. Unfortunately for Lode Runner, we live in an era where dynamic gameplay is prevalent and new ways to play are being discovered constantly, so players may see this simplicity and not give it a shot. That would be a shame. I’ve really grown to appreciate and enjoy Lode Runner Legacy and I think others could too; I definitely recommend this game.

What Lode Runner Legacy isn't: something new and innovative that focuses on adding new elements to that distant classic from the '80s. What Lode Runner Legacy is: the original game at its best, with added levels, a retro-friendly voxel art style that fits like a glove, and a level editor that raises the replay value sky high… and it's on Nintendo Switch!

There’s absolutely no doubt that the developers have pulled out every stop to make Lode Runner Legacy something special. The game’s look is both classic and modern at once, and the inclusion of the level and voxel editors and community support are great modern touches. The underlying question, though, is whether or not you find the fundamentals of the Lode Runner play style compelling or not. If you do, this is probably a must-buy game since I don’t think anything more could be done with that base, but if the appeal of the series is limited no amount of value added effort will redeem it.

As for myself, I do love a bit of retro gaming, and Lode Runner Legacy does a great job at supplying plenty of content around its basic gameplay structure. If you want to experience a bit of gaming history, then this little title may very well be up your ladder. It plays great on the TV and its quick fix gameplay works perfectly for a handheld. Sure, it may not tickle the taste buds of those seeking complexity, but with a great building mechanic and tons of levels to play through, there’s plenty here to keep you occupied under a tight budget.

One part retro, one part modern-esque, Lode Runner Legacy marries much of what made the original so memorable.
