Mirthwood

Mirthwood is an entertaining and engaging mashup of cozy farming and RPG adventuring. It’s easy to spend a lot of relaxing time puttering around, chatting up the townsfolk or combing the world for treasure.

Despite its flaws, I’m willing to forgive Mirthwood because it offers so much. One of my favorite aspects is how the game lets me experience it at my own pace. Social interactions are a major focus—meeting locals, building (or sabotaging) relationships, and even pursuing romance. I can marry, have children, and shape my personal story through these connections. The morality system adds another layer of depth. Certain deeds can raise or lower my morality, and being "all good" isn’t always the best path. For instance, I met a merchant who refused to sell me goods because I hadn’t "gotten my hands dirty" enough. These nuanced mechanics make the world feel dynamic and responsive to my choices. Mirthwood was one of my most anticipated games this year, and its ability to blend depth, freedom, and storytelling exceeded my expectations.

However, in its current state, Mirthwood is a game that only the most patient and forgiving players will find truly charming or amusing.

Mirthwood will appeal to those who enjoy a good adventure in the form of something like Outward, and those who love a bit of Stardew Valley.

Mirthwood fails to inspire any feelings similar to its namesake.

Verily, Mirthwood doth take the cozy charm of Stardew Valley's life-simulation and grant it a darker, more ambitious twist, allowing players to delve into a vast and wondrous fantasy realm where they may explore, build, forge friendships, and carve their own tale. The game’s grand scope and rich atmosphere doth draw thee in, yet 'tis hard to disregard the pests and frequent drops in frame rate that oft break the spell of immersion. Though the life-simulation elements are merry and engaging, the combat doth leave much to be desired. Still, for a game wrought by but two humble creators, Mirthwood is a mighty feat, even with its rough-hewn edges.

Though a little rough around the edges at the moment, Mirthwood is a definite up-and-coming RPG that’s been a blast to play.

Mirthwood is an open-ended farming sim with a unique dark fantasy setting. While character interaction is limited and combat is underwhelming, you’ll find yourself spoiled with things to do, allowing you to live free in a hand-drawn and mysterious country.

Mirthwood was the title I was most looking forward to this year. The delay in its release disappointed me greatly, but today, the only thing I am disappointed with is the state of this production and all of its unfulfilled promises. I might return to it later, because I see the potential in it, and perhaps, like No Man's Sky, The Mirthwood will get fixed through the patches, but right now, it's simply not worth your time.

Mirthwood has the makings of a very good life sim game. It heavily reminds me in the best possible way of Echoes of Plum Grove, another fantasy life sim RPG that I reviewed this year. If you love crafting and adventuring, the freedom to choose your own path, a beautiful and unique art style, great music, and attention to detail, I think you’ll love Mirthwood.
