Some will find Monster Prom: XXL rubs them the wrong way – the outcome of the game often feels quite random – but it's about the journey and sharing its eccentricity with your friends. It doesn't rival the Jackbox series, but it captures a similar and very welcome vibe which could turn it into a monster hit.

Monster Prom XXL is not your average dating game. The diabolic datable cast is bursting with character, the set pieces are outlandish and the endings go from the sublime to the ridiculous. That said, without a guide, the structure of the game will become annoyingly repetitive before you unlock the secret endings which are, by far and away, the best aspect of this game.

I honestly didn't know what to expect when I sat down to play Monster Prom XXL, what is a high school multiplayer monster dating sim anyway? The answer is: a whole lot of fun with some big laughs to be had. How long that fun will last with such a repetitive structure is up for debate however. One thing's for certain though: Monster Prom XXL is the best high school multiplayer monster dating sim I've every played.

This game is catty; risqué, full of fun pop culture references, has some seriously disturbing humor at times, and is packed with paranormal high school weirdness and bad behavior. The characters you interact with are wacky and occasionally fourth wall breaking. I found this game to be quite the guilty pleasure. The big drawback for me is that it’s played in short blocks of time that you can’t save. The thirty minute to an hour window needed to play a single game is a deterrent in some situations. If you, like me, enjoy a bit of paranormal silliness around Halloween give this one a look!

To a certain extent, games are always about tastes, but that is especially true here. Monster Hunter XXL is tailored specifically for those who want a bawdy Choose Your Own Adventure with light RPG elements and lots of replay value. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’ll find it here, and at a pretty good price point considering the quantity of content. It’s not a game for kids, though.

Monster Prom: XXL may seem pretty strange, but it's precisely this strangeness that elevates it to greatness. It was clearly designed with multiplayer in mind, as this mode stands as the strongest experience in the game. Even in single-player though, Monster Prom is sure to capture you with its quick wit and charming art style. There's a lot to love here, and I hope that there's a place in your heart for that special monster.

While the gameplay gets repetitive after a while, Monster Prom XXL has unique characters, a fun art style, and interesting twists for the dating sim genre.

If you’re looking for some crude, ridiculous fun then look no further. While Monster Prom XXL might feel like it’s working against you sometimes, getting rejected and having to try again is just part of the fun.

Monster Prom XXL is a delight to experience. The artwork is beautiful, despite some shortcuts taken. What absolutely ended up flooring me though was the writing. Simply hilarious. The music is great, and sort of reminded me of a Beach Boys song. It feels like it was intended to be enjoyed in small bursts, making it ideal on the Nintendo Switch.
