Why play it

Catarina Claes, the young daughter of a noble family, one day bumps her head and regains memories of her past life as an otaku. It is then that she realizes she has been reborn into the world of the otome game Fortune Lover, reincarnated as the game's villainess who, regardless of what route the player took in the original game, is doomed to be either killed or exiled. In order to avoid these routes that lead to doom, Catarina begins taking countermeasures to try and avoid things going the same way as the game. This, however, ends up having unexpected consequences on her relations with the other characters of the game's world.

Story and worldbuilding

Catarina Claes is a young woman born into a family of nobility who has a memory of her past life as a high school student. She was reincarnated as a Villainess in an otome game called Fortune Lover. Exile or death were all that awaited her in this new world. However, she managed to evade these ends, and somehow made it through the year to spring break. As fate would have it, both Catarina and her adopted brother, Keith, were to board a state-of-the-art luxury liner called the Vinculum on its maiden voyage during their time away from the Academy. Once aboard the ship, she realized her friends were also in attendance on what was meant to be a luxurious journey at sea. The tides changed quickly when they were attacked by pirates who took over the Vinculum and held all of its passengers hostage. This turn of events all seemed familiar to Catarina, and she begins to recall this was the storyline to a Fortune Lover fanbook. Could this mean she’s living in a resurrection of a canned doom ending?! Will Catarina and her friends be able to return to Sorcier safely? The curtain rises for a new twist in this doom-flag-evading romantic comedy!

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! -Pirates of the Disturbance- feels like a few episodes of the anime put together into a well made visual novel package. The writing can feel clunky, but the charm of the characters shines through. Fans of the show, manga, or light novel will find something to like here, and otome game fans will find a game with a ton of options and robust ease of play.

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! -Pirates of the Disturbance- is a strong extension of the original series. With returning voice actors from the original anime series, a well-written original story, and a whimsical soundtrack, it’s a great visual novel to pick up. Your fun fate awaits!

This game is highly recommended for those who already love the property, but given my lack of knowledge of the series, I can also say it’s great for newcomers who love otome games with a sense of humour. Catarina Claes may be the best otome protagonist I’ve encountered yet, and I hope she gets another adventure on consoles soon.

I think I would have appreciated My Next Life as a Villainess so much more if I was an existing fan of the property. Otomate seems to have created something that is a fascinating observation of the otome genre and a very funny, character-driven “romance” story to go with it. Unfortunately, too much of that washed over my head. While I totally respect that developers of games can assume that players have read or seen something else first, and that their game is a continuation of an existing story, I would suggest that giving newcomers the option of a 10-minute summary to catch up first would be a helpful way for those of us coming in fresh to at least understand the basics before we’re thrown in the narrative deep end.

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! -Pirates of the Disturbance- is a good example of its genre, featuring charismatic characters and a well-organized plot whose details are sprinkled across multiple routes. The game is more inviting for those who already know the original material and want to experience a little more of the interactions between Catarina and her potential boyfriends, but it can also be easily enjoyed by those who are not yet familiar with the franchise.

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! ~Pirates of the Disturbance~ is, without a doubt, a work for the original fans of the series. It delivers all the (heterosexual) romance that we wish existed in the novel, since our imagination is not enough. But its jokes are stale and the initial interactions bring nothing new: it is everything that we have already seen before.

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! -Pirates of the Disturbance- is a game that is very true to the series. The story, setting, and new characters are not something that would be out of place in the original story line. With the series taking place in a world of an otome, it’s only fitting that the game is a solid example of one also. The characters are unique and each route differs enough from each other to keep things interesting. If you are a fan of the series I can definitely recommend this, and if you are not but are looking for a more light hearted otome, then I would say this isn’t a bad choice for you either.

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! -Pirates of the Disturbance- is a good product for fans of the series, but it totally fails to come close to the standards of the Otome genre.
