Even stranger, he discovers that the other 12 passengers – 3 young women and 9 men – are all supposedly espers with special powers, and are on some kind of journey at the behest of a multinational entity only known as The World. What is the purpose of their journey? What is their destination? Who is The World? Delve into the story of the ship and its occupants through the point of views of each of the three girls, and unravel the mysteries trapped within.

Story and worldbuilding

Within an old-fashioned town, much like the Meiji and Taisho Era, there exists a giant globe that floats in midair. This is the ‘ship’ called ‘Norn’. The inside is set like a small town with parks, etc. The story takes place a little in the future. Guided by one particular song, young elementary kid, Suzuhara Sorata is warped through a time skip to an unfamiliar place much like the Meiji and Taisho eras from his textbooks. In this world, he meets 3 young ladies and 9 young men, and joins them on a journey aboard the mysterious ‘Norn’ ship in the sky.

Now that it's been cleaned up, Norn9: Var Commons is one of the stronger romance novel entries on Switch. With a neat plot, no time to get bored with a suitor because there's still plenty to go, and just enough hints to guess where the common ending will go, it'll be worth some time heading to meet The World.

The real reason for this release is that the “sequel” fandisc, Norn9 Last Era is currently being prepped for release later this year, and Aksys realises that the best way to get people to buy that is to have played the original. It’s mildly cynical, but at the same time, for something this niche. understandable. There are certain visual novels that I think I would have rather seen on Switch first (Hakuouki springs to mind), but nonetheless, this is a really exceptional page-turner sci-fi tale that boasts some great characters. Don’t let it miss you a second time.

Norn9: Var Commons attempts to do a lot and, while it is an enjoyable otome game and at its best on the Switch, some routes are more satisfying than others.

Norn9: Var Commons is an otome game with a weak start, but it becomes more interesting when it finally shows the rich details behind the characters and mysteries. It's an easy recommendation for fans of the genre.

Norn9 Var Commons is a pretty good start to my Otome year. It has a lot of different, well-thought-out characters. I think there is a character everyone can relate to. The story itself left me curious about where it would go, and I loved the sci-fi theme that the whole game has. Whether it was a well-beloved game for you when it first came out or whether you are looking for a new Otome game, this is a good one. I think, even though the game is a remake of an older game, it still brings something new to the Otome world.

An interesting science fiction story, but it leaves some loose ends. We have nine routes available with nine totally different guys.

Norn9: Var Commons is, without a doubt, a visual novel recommended for people who love sci-fi stories; however, at the same time, it's enticing even for non-fans of the genre with its well written plot and unique, charismatic characters. With quality of life features that make reading a breeze, minigames that break up the text density, and a great audiovisual presentation, the only caveat is how it leaves the main character behind but, otherwise, we have an excellent otome game for Switch.
