Pirate Warriors 4 is a great One Piece-flavored spin on the musou genre with a deep roster and simple but fun combat

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 struggles to outdo its fantastic predecessor, but it's still great fun to smash through hordes of enemies alongside such a colourful cast of characters. The game's delightful and diverse roster really is its greatest strength, and thanks to an emphasis on building combos, the combat system can be surprisingly rewarding, despite its repetitive nature. The pretty standard story mode will leave non-fans completely lost, but those who enjoy the action will find a near endless supply of it in the title's other offerings.

A let down it is that Omega Force couldn't dedicate as much time to the visuals as they have done the source material, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is still the kind of game — the kind of Musou too — that seemingly does the unthinkable in providing a ludicrous-yet-fulfilling action game regardless of its depth.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 Legendary Edition is a complete, but exhaustive collection. The game itself does little wrong, but it doesn't bring a giant treasure on board either. In terms of gameplay, you've seen this before in previous parts or other games in the genre, and unfortunately often in a better way. Visually, this game is lagging behind and you can't get around it. The camera during the chaotic gameplay also doesn't work as it should. Fortunately, you are presented with a nice bundle of content, especially as a new player. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 Legendary Edition is a legendary title on paper, but one that mainly sails on autopilot at sea.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is an excellent Musou game that any One Piece fan will instantly fall in love with. Although the game can be daunting for newcomers and the camera can be tricky at times, it's hard not to appreciate the incredible work Omega Force has done implementing over 60 characters and a great variety of modes.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 remains one of the best Musou games out there, and that status is further solidified with the slight changes made by the free current-generation console patch. The core gameplay loop remains engaging in its simplicity, but the additions of an expanded move set and a wide variety of characters who play differently assuage any concerns of fatigue. The quests can start to feel too similar, but the various modes give fans plenty to do. The presence of multiplayer for a good chunk of the game also greatly extends the life of the game. If you're a fan of either Musou titles or One Piece, this title is well worth having.

Sailing the seas of the new generation of consoles, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 is one of those games with many reasons to be played. Not only the combat is fun and straightforward, but the missions have a good variety, especially thanks to the interesting characters and events in the story. With smooth performance and plenty of content – which can be expanded with DLCs or via more complete versions – this is a great addition to your library (whatever it may be).

While I can understand that licensed Warriors games seek a very specific audience, I still think One Piece Warriors 4 is a very mediocre game in both cases: as a musou game that is fun to play, and as a good One Piece experience, especially for novice audiences who probably won't be able to enjoy it at all, and will instead just be lost in figuring out its story. Furthermore, it is a 2020 game that unfortunately does not stand out among the sea of Warriors games that Koei Tecmo has in its portfolio. Because the Warriors franchise has so many titles, it needs something to stand out, and unfortunately, One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 is not able to stand out. Therefore, I cannot recommend this game unless you find it at a steep discount.
