But it’s hard to knock the games too hard for retaining original experience intact in this respect, as the remasters improve pretty much everything else. This collection leaves you with what is now the definitive way to experience Patapon and Patapon 2.

Patapon 1+2 Replay is a real blast from the past and more than proves why this series was such a hit for Sony. It's simple to play, but if you dig deeper you'll find that there's a real meaty game here. The rhythm-based controls make it unlike any strategy game you've ever played before. There are some small frustrations, but generally it succeeds in what it tries to do.

This is the PSP’s premiere music game that everyone loves? Parappa was sent to cross the rainbow bridge for this? How can I be this bored playing a game about music? These questions may haunt me forever. Or at least until I go back to the local arcade for a few rounds of Pop‘n Music.

The first two titles in the beloved Patapon series are being repackaged and released on new platforms, without losing any of their rhythm. Patapon 1+2 Replay revives the two PSP games with various improvements and invites us to beat the drum rhythmically once again.

A massive, unique, and addictive collection with some grind and backtracking, but still worth returning to.

Patapon 1 + 2 Replay remains a uniquely rhythmic gem that feels both nostalgic and special even today. If you can overlook its dated UI, occasional control quirks, and aging audiovisual presentation, it delivers a magical rhythm-game experience, especially for returning fans, for whom it serves as a heartfelt trip down memory lane.

Fans of the originals will certainly want to pick up Patapon 1+2 Replay if they’re like me and sold their PSP eons ago. However, the PS Store’s PS4 version of the titles doesn’t stray too far from this release, and are effectively the same price (and even less during sales). Nevertheless, newcomers will likely get the best Patapon experience picking up Patapon 1+2 Replay, as the latency sync is such a benefactor that it can warrant the purchase.

I’m super grateful for the remaster, allowing me to replay a classic that I’ve always been curious about. I certainly don’t regret spending my time with Patapon 1+2 Replay, but I’m also glad that I was able to leave it behind me and drop the compulsion to complete it, or I would have been chanting Pata-Pata-Pata-Pon into my casket.

Rhythm action is a hard thing to get right at the best of times but, Patapon 1+2 Replay is a joyous package. It's great to see the return of such a niche and interesting set of games, and to see them reach new platforms too. With challenging gameplay and a fun sense of style, players would be remiss to miss this unique experience. Get these!
