Pirates VR: Jolly Roger is a major missed opportunity in the world of virtual reality. Relying on outdated mechanics and graphics optimized for portable hardware, the developers have delivered an experience that falls short of modern VR and contemporary gaming standards.

I’m genuinely surprised that the developers at Splight Light didn’t spend more time polishing this title. Pirates VR: Jolly Roger had the potential to be a really good game, but it ended up as an average experience where you can almost hear the echo of a wasted potential. If you enjoy calm and short adventure games, it might be worth checking out, but if you’re expecting a true pirate adventure under the black flag, the pirate ships in the game will mostly remain somewhere in the background.

I wish that Pirates VR: Jolly Roger offered lootin' and ship-captainin' because its confusin' and frustratin' adventure just isn't all that jolly. 🦜

Fundamentally, a puzzle game with light gameplay elements, Pirates VR Jolly Roger is a short story that tries to recreate the most recognizable highlights of a pirate’s life, but ends up showing only the stereotypes without bringing anything new to the table.

Pirates VR: Jolly Roger offers a colorful and charming slice of pirate fantasy with lush environments, light puzzle-solving, and rewarding exploration, but its shallow combat, technical inconsistencies, and short runtime keep it from fully delivering on its potential; while enjoyable for a brief escape into a swashbuckling world, the lack of mechanical depth and polish makes it feel more like a playful VR detour than a truly immersive adventure built for the medium.

Once Pirates VR: Jolly Roger is completed, it feels like a small step back in time due to its highly traditional approach. If I still had the first Sony VR headset in mind, I might have been more impressed by Split Light Studio’s work, despite its very short duration. There are no unforgivable flaws—the mechanics are functional, though undeniably old-school. In the end, it’s an enjoyable yet predictable pirate-themed VR adventure, well-crafted but brief and highly foreseeable.
