Why play it

A yuri visual novel that will make you both laugh and cry. A story about love, trust, mortality, and about understanding not just how to be happy, but how to be human.

Story and worldbuilding

Born as a fox in the forest of Korea, Miho carries with her the memory of a traveler who showed her kindness and spoke of home. Now more human than fox, Miho has spent a long, long time searching for her person. She arrives by airship to Wellington, one of the jewels of the floating island of New Zealand. Despite her years spent observing humans, she still has a lot to learn about their culture and society. She's made a living so far as a thief, her heightened senses allowing her to easily take advantage of people. She's also seen a lot of the worst of what mankind has to offer. It's only after meeting Juliet, the owner of a small library, and Aspen, an aspiring novelist, that Miho starts to understand what kindness is, and that there's more than just the bad stuff when it comes to people.

Please Be Happy is a fundamentally simple game in its form and essence. Even though there is nothing technically impressive about the way the story is told or the way its characters interact and are presented, in a sea full of cozy games that are essentially low risk and with very few challenges, Please Be Happy stands out for its more intimate theme, tackling slightly heavier topics and delving into them while using its world to create and explore new pains that may be a reflection of what we experience in our reality.

Please Be Happy is a gorgeous visual novel that takes a unique approach by spending time growing the main character while also developing relations, even if the world could have been expanded more.

If you’re here for romance I suspect you may be disappointed. There isn’t enough strength in the romantic writing for me to recommend it on that basis. Really Please Be Happy is more story than yuri. I was pleased and engaged by the experience but I do think it’s important to go in with the appropriate expectations. Please Be Happy is light, but it isn’t disposable. If you’re looking for a relaxed slice-of-life story with some thoughtful exploration of purpose and identity, with a small helping of romance, then I think Please Be Happy is a safe bet. If nothing else the wonderful art and music justify the price tag in my book.

Between its gorgeous presentation and sentimental script, Please Be Happy might just be the most uplifting and heartfelt story I've taken in all year, full stop.
