Pong Quest

While unique twists on the Pong formula make battles enjoyable at first, the repetition quickly wears on the experience

Sparsely laid out, mechanically simplistic, and generally a bit of a bore to play, PONG Quest fails to do anything meaningful with this most neglected of gaming properties. The adventuring element is paper-thin, and even the game of bat-and-ball at the heart of its battle system feels flat and lifeless. As always with Pong, local multiplayer is your best bet for fun, but there's little that's fresh about that.

Pong Quest overachieves and winds up delivering a top-notch game of Pong while also paying tribute to and expanding upon dungeon-crawling RPG tropes.

The problem with Pong Quest on a whole is that for a crossover, it doesn’t lean heavily enough into RPGs to be interesting for RPGamers, and by the other side of it, you can only play so much Pong before it gets stale.

Pong Quest adds an interesting dungeon crawling twist to the classic title but doesn’t do enough to make itself a must play.

Pong Quest has real heart and soul, it just hasn't been properly thought through, and that's a shame, as the flimsy story is genuinely likeable

Pong Quest may masquerade as something new and fresh, but it very much remains the same decades-old game with only just a dusting of RPG mechanics.

When I wasn't bored with the lack of substance to this game, I was aggravated by every enemy encounter and the core battle mechanics. When the best part of the game is the classic local multiplayer Pong experience from nearly 50 years ago, that should say a lot about the quality of the game. If you really want to play the original Pong on Switch, that should be the only reason you should be picking up this title.

PONG Quest mixes the classic PONG formula with RPG gameplay – it sounds like a weird mix, but it actually makes for a pleasantly enjoyable experience. Sure, it can get a little repetitive in places and the visuals are a bit too simple in design, but it still has this undeniable charm that’ll keep you hooked in until the very end of your quest. Who would’ve thought that PONG could make such a quirky yet fun return to player’s screens in 2020?
