Why play it

Sayaka Kaori has fallen into a coma. However, she can be reached by a machine that can people into dreams. Dreams are incredibly surreal places, and are often very dangerous. Only experts from The National Public Safety Commission, also known as Diamond Dogs, are authorized to enter. It's up to Ryo and Maria, two of the best Diamond Dog officers, to save Sayaka and wake her from her coma.

Story and worldbuilding

In the early 1980s, rumors begin to circulate about a new entertainment medium called “D Movie”, which allows people to immerse themselves in a world of virtual reality. As D Movies gain traction, a trend emerges of disaffected young people taking permanent refuge in the virtual world while abandoning their physical bodies to atrophy. To retrieve these so-called “Sinkers”, Japan's National Public Safety Commission establishes Public Security Division Four, nicknamed “Diamond Dog”, in 1984. The agents who enter the virtual world and perform these rescues are known as Debuggers. In 1992, a seventeen-year-old girl named Yūki Sayaka sinks into “Story of the Ruined Capital”, a D Movie directed by David Visconti. Three days pass before she is discovered, and combined with her weak constitution, she is expected to die within twenty-four hours. Two Debuggers, Shijima Ryō and Tobari Maria, are dispatched to rescue her before that happens.

Psycho Dream is a fun, challenging 2D action platformer; it’s one of those Japan only game that never had the chance outside of the land of the Rising Sun and it’s fun seeing it getting a new lease on life. It has all the classic features; straight forward, challenging boss fights, enjoyable level design and interesting power ups. Once you get adapted to the “heavy” movements and weapon short range, you’ll find a nice hidden gem. If you’re a fan of 2D action games, Psycho Dream is a no-brainer.

While some retro fans may find it appealing, the gameplay is a bit messy and follows the old rule of “overpowered until you get hit too much” design

Still, the inexcusable emulation errors also cause the game to be significantly more difficulty here than it should be, which takes what could have been a solid port of an otherwise fun action game, into an infuriating mess where you’re fighting against invisible obstacles for no logical reason at all.
