Why play it

Retro Goal is a mix of arcade soccer action and simple team management, from the developers of New Star Soccer and Retro Bowl. With graphics inspired by football games of 16-bit era and modern touchscreen controls, you'll be slotting away goal after goal. Retro Goal is a distinctively light and fun take on football, coming at a budget price and having enough depth and charm to get players hooked. It has a stylish look and will raise a smile among enthusiasts; in fact, the only way it fails to match its brilliant predecessor - Retro Bowl - is in the gameplay department. The team-based complexity of football makes it hard to recreate that backyard sport feel, but it is still excellent and irreverent fun that feels at home on Switch.

Football and nostalgia are at the core of Retro Goal and make it work despite some design flaws.

Retro Goal is a solid game that does simple soccer well. It's got a simple control scheme (thanks to its simple gameplay) and offers a surprisingly in-depth management element. Its simplicity is the only negative I can bring out, as you experience everything the game offense incredibly quickly. Your long-lasting enjoyment of this game will likely depend on your love of soccer. If you're like me and aren't a big soccer fan there are a few hours of fun to be found in Retro Goal.

Retro Goal is just a really fun game all-around. It captures not just the spirit of the sport it's trying to emulate, but also the essence of what makes a great soccer game. It may not look like the new standard for soccer games on the Switch, but if you pick it up, you'll soon find it makes a very convincing argument.

Another hidden gem from New Star Games, Retro Goal's super affordable price, throwback graphics, and surprisingly deep modes make it a great game for both the soccer enthusiast and kid who wants to get into the sport and/or video games. At its core, the game's simplistic controls lead the way to an addictive obsession that can see you breeze through half a season before you know it. While perhaps not as fun as its cousin, Retro Bowl, there's still a ton of enjoyment to be had with this one.
