Rugby 22

Rugby 22 does some things a lot better than any rugby game of the past decade, especially on the field. Unfortunately, everything off the field keeps the game from having any sort of replay value unless you are a diehard.

Rugby 22 takes the oval and charges with his head down. There are several interesting ideas and a lot of work to do.

Rugby 22 is an honest simulation, offering beautiful sensations controller in hand, as long as you have the patience to dive into it. Unfortunately, the whole thing is weighed down by disappointing official content, inaccuracies in terms of gameplay and an AI that struggles to keep up, while this sport needs a perfectly honed mechanics to exercise its full potential.

If you’ve been hanging out since the PS2 era to just have some fun with a rugby union game, you might just find it in Rugby 22.

Will injury-ridden defending champions Wales and new Captain Dan Biggar keep their crown with the Six Nations kicking off today? Or will favourites France storm through under the tutelage of Fabien Galthié? I’m excited to see how Scotland fair in their opening against England for the Calcutta Cup. Something about that team could spell magic this year!

We’re getting there. Rugby 22 is still a flawed game, but it’s better than its predecessor, which was already a massive improvement over the disastrous Rugby 18.

Rugby 22 is a big step in the right direction for the rugby sim genre. I can’t help but wonder though how much more enjoyable and engaging the game would be if it had managed to secure licenses for the English league and international teams and the South African international team. There’s still plenty for fans of the All Blacks, Wallabies, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and many other nations though!
