Why play it

Satisfactory is a 2024 Simulator, Adventure, Strategy game rated 9.6/10 from 277.8k ratings, with a main story of about 93.3h, available on PC (Microsoft Windows), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S.

Satisfactory is a first-person factory simulation game set on an alien planet. Players take the role of a Pioneer, an employee of the megacorporation FICSIT Inc., tasked with harvesting natural resources and constructing increasingly complex automated production lines. The goal is to manufacture components for "Project Assembly," delivered via a space elevator to an orbital platform. The game features a hand-crafted open world spanning approximately 30 square kilometers across multiple biomes, a tiered technology progression system, cooperative multiplayer, and extensive logistics management through conveyor belts, pipelines, and vehicles.

Story and worldbuilding

An unnamed Pioneer employed by the megacorporation FICSIT Inc. is dropped from orbit onto the surface of an alien planet designated MASSAGE-2(AB)b. The drop pod malfunctions, and the Pioneer barely survives the landing, awakening with no memories. Guided by FICSIT's artificial intelligence, ADA, the Pioneer learns she is one of few to have landed successfully in the region. ADA instructs her to begin constructing infrastructure for ""Project Assembly,"" described only as part of a larger initiative called the Save the Day Program, intended to rescue Earth from an unspecified catastrophe. As the Pioneer builds deeper into the planet's wilderness, she discovers mysterious alien artifacts that trigger strange mental contact with an unknown intelligence. Something on this world is trying to communicate, and the true nature of both the planet and FICSIT's mission may be more complex than a simple resource extraction operation.

Despite its name, Satisfactory is much more than merely adequate – its finely tuned loop of automation and escalating expansion is downright excellent.

Supremely satisfying factory-building on a beguiling alien planet. It is already 3am.

It’s surreal to see a game I played in my first year of work at Shacknews finally find its way to that Version 1.0. I couldn’t be happier for Coffee Stain after its lengthy journey, but it helps that this is a really dang good sim, and a true creative sandbox. I think the freeform nature of Satisfactory is both its greatest power and its most intimidating offering, simply because the sheer lack of guidance can leave players directionless and overwhelmed, especially as you wait and stew on it while resources bake in the early game. However, the sheer beauty of Satisfactory as you slowly expand a little base into a highly programmed and automated industrial machine is a neat and rewarding process, and if you have a friend or two to bring along, all the more fun.

In a game with the scope and polish of Satisfactory one hundred hours can be just the beginning of building the industrial powerhouse of your dreams.

Satisfactory is almost like a drug. Once you start playing, it’s impossible to stop! It’s a game built around a brilliant core idea, even if the execution falls just a little short. Despite its bugs, it’s an absolute joy to play.

Satisfactory is a superb port from PC to Console. Quite often, games within this genre don’t always perform well on the Xbox family of machines. This has to be the most polished version of a PC original I’ve clapped eyes on. If you’re a fan of the grind of materials and resources with a view to crafting and building giant, sprawling, efficient factories, then you’ll love it.

Satisfactory on PlayStation 5 is a successful adaptation of a complex PC game for consoles. The controller-based controls remain the biggest compromise and require patience and a period of adjustment. However, once players find their rhythm, they are rewarded with the same strong gameplay flow known from the PC version. Graphics and performance are of a high standard; the game runs smoothly and looks excellent. Even without mod support, Satisfactory offers plenty of depth, motivation, and long-term enjoyment. For players without a powerful PC, the PS5 version is a very good alternative and a clear recommendation for anyone who enjoys automation, planning, and optimization. Satisfactory proves that complex building and management games can work on consoles, even if small compromises are necessary.

Satisfactory is much more than a factory simulator. It is an experience of creativity, strategy, and discovery. Its ability to absorb the player for hours, its visually appealing world, and its mechanical depth make it one of the most outstanding titles in its category.
