Slayaway Camp: Butcher's Cut

Slayaway Camp: Butcher's Cut is an enjoyably addictive sliding puzzle game that although it can get repetitive has enough variety within its puzzles to keep you returning for more. Its cartoony visuals help to make for some humorous, murder cut-scenes that will either make you chuckle or grimace. If you're a huge Hallowe'en hooligan or a profoundly psychotic puzzler, Slayaway Camp is well worth checking out.

With its cute and delightfully grotesque exterior, Slayaway Camp: Butcher's Cut is an easily accessible and addictive puzzler that throws in '80's references where it can, by the bucket-load. It's jam-packed with unlockables, host to some brilliant synth-heavy music and doesn't shy away from some truly gruesome but equally hilarious murder sequences. There's plenty of substance here that keeps us coming back for more, and with the help of a continuous trickle of silly and over-the-top horror humour, we are hard-pushed not to crack a smile every time we give it a stab.

For a game with such simplistic graphics it really was able to convey the overall theme to the game extraordinarily well. The puzzles were fun and challenging but not too hard where you just wanted to be done with the game. The interactive kill scene between movie episodes kept getting bored during loading screens at a bare minimum. All in all this is one title I would definitely recommend picking up even if you aren’t a horror fan. The puzzle aspect is one where any level of experience is welcomed and encouraged.

Slayaway Camp: Butcher’s Cut is ridiculous fun, but more so if you’re a fan of the old school horror films it imitates. Nothing here is taken seriously, except for the puzzles themselves which are often fiendishly difficult, but always fair. As a package, it manages to evoke an odd nostalgia on top of genuine laughs, a wealth of unlockables and head-scratching puzzles. There’s a killer soundtrack to boot, which fits nicely into the background of each movie, punctuated by outlandish cartoon sound effects. This is bite-size puzzle gaming at its finest.

Slayaway Camp: Butchers Cut does a great job of keeping the gameplay simple and engaging. The 80's horror throwback is a great and imaginative setting that you would not expect here. Overall its a fun little puzzle game.

It takes a basic concept and never lingers too long on one idea, continually adding new and novel twists. For the several hours it will take you to finish, Slayaway Camp stays fresh, avoiding the common problems of the horror movies it draws influence from. Even when mimicking the absurdity of later Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street movies, it stays inventive and fun.

Slayaway camp is a great little puzzle game which will have you thinking about and replaying levels over and over again until you get it right. Each level is different, which is an amazing feat for over 300 puzzles set within a limited play area, each with progressing difficulty as they add more mechanics and obstacles as you go from chapter to chapter.

Slayaway Camp: Butcher's Cut is a very fun and highly addictive sliding puzzle/slasher release on PlayStation 4 that you should definitely try. Even if gore is not your thing you can tone down the violence and still be left with an entertaining puzzle release with a ton of levels to complete, so be sure to check this one out!
