Why play it

“You chose exile in search of penance, in place of revenge. I seek to give you both - and in return… I will be set free.” - FATHER Enter the dystopian world of SPRAWL, a hardcore retro FPS set in an endless cyberpunk megalopolis. Advances in cybernetics and artificial intelligence pushed humanity into a new era, but that golden age has crumbled…leaving behind a broken world. Play as SEVEN, a disgraced special ops super soldier who finds herself embroiled in conflict with government forces trying to kill her while a mysterious voice in her head pushes her to survive. Betrayed by her organization and on a mission to overthrow the Junta, a military regime that rules the sprawl with an iron fist, SEVEN must escape the walled city and discover what secrets lie at the SPIRE. The streets of the SPRAWL are vast and the armies of the corporate government seem endless. But the dark alleys and dilapidated apartment surfaces are all compatible with the “Icarus” cybernetic implant, allowing SEVEN to perform gravity-defying wall-running maneuvers and slow down time with excess adrenaline drops from dismembered enemies. With a horde of different troop types and carefully designed weapons, she will be pushed to the limit to survive. The SPRAWL eventually consumes us all…will you fight your way out?

Issues I had with the controls aside, SPRAWL is a solid shooter with a fantastic soundtrack and aesthetic. When you get into the flow of chaining together wall runs and jumps, sliding around, and taking down enemies with precise headshots, it's a fun time. The story isn't anything to write home about, but it does what it needs to do and at under $20/£15 at full price, it's worth taking a look at.

SPRAWL is a very solid newcomer to the movement-based FPS subgenre. Boasting some great abilities, solid gunfights, and an engrossing atmosphere, fast-paced shooter fanatics are sure to love this one.

Sprawl is an excellent first-person shooter that combines old-school and modern gameplay. It succeeds in achieving what matters most within the genre—offering players adrenaline-fueled battles that play well and make them feel like they’ve transformed into powerful and capable killers. The immersive atmosphere is created by impressive audiovisual design that will make cyberpunk fans feel right at home.

Overall, I will say that SPRAWL is an enjoyable game. If you can manage the mechanics. It just seems to lack the longevity you’d hope for to get the most out of it.

SPRAWL turns out to be another pleasant shooter which, although not revolutionizing FPS, has been able to season various ingredients of the shooter and cyberpunk genre in a satisfying way.

Sprawl isn't trying to reinvent the wheel when it comes to retro-inspired shooters, delivering a rather by-the-numbers fast-paced shooter experience.

SPRAWL from developer MAETH is a well-made, intricately designed first-person wall-running game that hits all the right notes with mechanics, gunplay, and level design. It does come with a mechanic learning curve that might frustrate some gamers but the reward of learning the mechanics is far greater than the frustration produced by them.

If you don't mind the relatively ugly graphics at times and are interested in trying out a boomer shooter that encourages a bit more strategy, then SPRAWL might just be the perfect title for you.

SPRAWL's menacing aesthetic, exciting gunplay and an unbelievably good soundtrack make for a yet another fantastic FPS campaign that leaves me wanting more in the future.

Sprawl is a focused and fun boomer shooter, even though it whets your appetite for more than it ends up giving you. There’s some brilliant ambience and scenery that suggests a much richer, more complex world than you get to see in its straightforward levels, empty of people and things to do other than an army of familiar foes to kill. Nonetheless, the gunplay is top-notch, especially when mixed with some wall-running parkour action. If you’re looking for an entertaining FPS with a satisfyingly cyberpunky flavour then Sprawl is just the right implant to augment your Steam library.
