Spy Chameleon

Spy Chameleon is a short game that feels too long. It's one good idea not fully realized and a reptilian mascot who deserves another shot.

Spy Chameleon's focus on challenges is obviously aimed at completionists, who will certainly get the most out of the game. Those who prefer to reach a level's exit and move on to the next one may end up feeling a little short-changed, as the challenges make up the bulk of the title's duration. However, the current asking price is extremely reasonable, especially when you consider the amount of replayability and achievements on offer. Spy Chameleon is a lot of fun and, despite some minor technical flaws, would make a great addition to any puzzle fan's eShop collection.

Despite Spy Chameleon being developer Unfinished Pixel's first game, the Barcelona-based studio has done a great job at simplifying a genre that can be daunting to newcomers. While some may be worried that this simplicity comes at a cost, the game also offers up a healthy challenge to experienced players. It may never reach the high points of a Metal Gear Solid or Thief game, but it does provide a constant helping of highly polished fun.

Its unassuming look might make you skim over it in the eShop, but it's hard not to recommend you give Spy Chameleon a chance. This is a game greater than the sum of its parts, and the fun to be had here is absolutely worth the price of admission and overlooking its small blemishes.

All said I’m a big fan of Spy Chameleon and its fresh take on stealth action puzzling. Never settling in for too long each mission feels just about the right length before the game throws some new things at you to get the hang of. Later in the game the puzzle element really begins to kick in as you’ll need to work carefully and methodically to avoid detection in a variety of ways. If you love creative action Spy Chameleon could just sneak its way into your list of favorites.

Unfinished Pixel has simplified stealth into its core essence and have created a very satisfying experience. It's sadly over before it really hits its stride, but there is plenty of incentive to replay levels. The short levels are also a perfect fit for handheld gaming.

Unfortunately the game really lacks for personality and character, and there's really nothing that helps this game stand out from the pack.

Spy Chameleon isn't the best indie game on the market, but it's definitely up there and sets it's place in a rather empty niche. It's not completely original, but it reminded me that shouldn't always be the case for a game to be fun. In other words, it's not completely perfect, but nowhere near cold blooded. (Oh the irony)

Spy Chameleon is simple and easy to recommend to players. What it does, it does well, and the price point is spot on. There isn't much to the game, but there is plenty to keep me coming back. Earning better times is fun, and competing with friends is a blast. This is the perfect solution to one of those "I have no idea what to play tonight" moods. Snag it for $5 and thank me later.
