An uneven, but ambitious adventure. Caracal has taken ingredients from some key titles and genres, added a brilliant traversal mechanic and cooked up a chilled-out, sci-fi wasteland odyssey. The game's mysterious, drip-fed narrative will keep you intrigued, and every moment spent on the grav board is undeniably enjoyable. Although Cebete may feel overly familiar, its vibrant landscapes and hidden secrets still make it worth exploring.

When in full flow, Star Overdrive gives a great sense of speed and fun from its hoverboard dynamic. It's unfortunate, then, that any reason for the exploration is missing, with similar bland puzzling and the same rinse and repeat scavenging mechanic. With the exception of some fun boss battles and hoverboard mechanics, this one doesn't stick the landing.

Star Overdrive ultimately delivers exactly what it promises: freedom, style, and the thrill of a futuristic adventure on a skateboard in the wasteland. It’s a game that thrives on atmosphere and speed, and even though it has its weaker moments, it never loses its ability to entertain. Some of the action could be more polished, and bugs pop up from time to time, but the game’s charisma and audiovisuals more than make up for it. If you’re craving an adrenaline-fueled ride where the blend of sci-fi poetry and ’90s rebellion takes center stage, this is your dream come true. Turn up the music, put on your virtual helmet, and go all out. This ride is worth it.

Star Overdrive possesses a unique essence thanks to its hoverboard navigation, and it occasionally succeeds in giving players a sense of excitement and fluidity. However, it suffers from scattered ambitions, technical issues, and a disjointed narrative. What could have been a standout standalone adventure ends up as an average experience with scattered moments of brilliance.

Star Overdrive has a lot of great ideas and a beautiful presentation while also being encumbered by frustrating platforming and combat systems. It’s hard to ignore the latter when the game’s best part is frequently put on hold to engage with tedious platforming puzzles and enemies that send out protagonist flying into the sand with no reserve.

Star Overdrive is a fun game that I think should have moved away from combat and focused on its more than notable hoverboard system and the puzzle areas. It's not a bad game at all, and Caracal Games have shown that they could make a great skating/hoverboarding game, since navigating planet Cebete at high speed is completely satisfying.

Overall, Star Overdrive is a game for the right moment. The game can be a blast to traverse with its hoverboard trick mechanics and can be extremely soothing if you want to explore, fight enemies, upgrade and customize your hoverboard and keytar, and solve the mystery of the story.

Star Overdrive is an ambitious game that delivers a lot of fun through its movement mechanics across the open world using a hoverboard. Unfortunately, however, it falls short by going overboard with the addition of systems and mechanics that lack the necessary polish to work as the studio intended, making much of the gameplay loop feel repetitive.

Indie studios are consistently creating some fantastic games, and Star Overdrive is one such example. Caracal Games Studio is a small, Italian team of around a dozen people and, with the publishing help of Dear Villagers, have delivered a brilliant adventure. This was a really fun title to play, with some beautifully unique environments to explore. Whilst the combat is fairly basic and the puzzles not too taxing, Star Overdrive is, overall, a game definitely worth playing. That’s why I’m giving Star Overdrive the Thumb Culture Gold Award!

Star Overdrive is a unique title that is fantastic fun and compelling enough to see through to the end. I can’t fault the ambition of the development team in creating something that feels enjoyable to play and explore. It misses the mark in some areas, but the core gameplay loop and cruising around on the hoverboard kept me engaged from the start.
