Why play it

Stronghold: Crusader is the successor to Firefly Studios's 2001 game Stronghold. Crusader has much in common with the original Stronghold, but differs from its predecessor in the fact that the game is no longer set in a pseudo-Europe, instead being set in the Middle East during the Crusades. The game features a multitude of new Arabian units that can be purchased in a new building, the mercenary post. Though the Arabian troops do not require any weapons to produce, they are rather expensive. The game was also released as Stronghold Warchest. This version was a compendium of Stronghold and an enhanced version of Stronghold: Crusader, containing additional characters and an additional Crusader Trail. Stronghold Warchest was only released in limited number of countries (i. e. USA or Poland), meaning players in the rest of the world have never encountered the second Crusader Trail, or second set of characters. This changed when an updated version of Stronghold Crusader, Stronghold: Crusader Extreme was released in early 2008.

Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition isn’t a revolution, but a celebration—a celebration of one of the best strategy games of all time, which has finally received the care it deserves. The developers at FireFly Studios have thoughtfully improved the technical aspects, added meaningful new content, and, above all, ensured that the game will run smoothly for future generations of players. The core of the game—that brilliant combination of economics, castle-building, and combat against charismatic AI lords—remains intact and is just as addictive as ever. The Desert King has returned, and his stronghold stands incredibly firm even after all these years, save for a few holes in its defenses.

With this remaster, Firefly Studios have added a competent new sheen to their most popular game, Stronghold: Crusader. This is likely to be enough for those nostalgic for the 2002 original, but the game’s aged, frustrating mechanics may be uninviting for newcomers.

Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition is at its best when it reminds you why this series has lasted so long. Not many real-time strategy games let you build a fortress stone by stone, watch peasants run through its walls, and then shoot arrows from its towers at an army that is charging. Its strategy boiled down to something both brutal and beautiful, and now it shines again in the desert sun.

As an overall package, Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition just doesn't tickle me like the first game does. A less captivating band of characters and an unwillingness to lean as firmly into history as its rivals did both back in the day and at present just make for a tonally too strange entity for me to have truly vibed with. It's a very fine game, but one that disappointed me. Maybe 20 years of anticipation was just bound to do that.

Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition truly is the definitive edition that improves on everything that the game already has and even adds much more. After two decades, it’s still as nostalgic and memorable as ever, yet somehow you can tell just how much better it is.

Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition launches a decades old crusade to reclaim the glory of 2002 and by all the knights and eunuchs does it succeed. An incredulous bounty of new content, alongside gloriously enhanced visuals and quality of life improvements make this an almost impenetrable castle. Storming the walls and setting kingdoms aflame has always been spectacular, but Firefly Studios have set a new gold standard for their own series, and for remasters everywhere.

Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition is a masterclass in remastering. It retains everything beloved about the original while adding enough polish, content, and convenience to justify its existence to new and returning players alike. While a few outdated design quirks and bugs persist, they pale in comparison to the sheer depth and charm this title continues to offer. For strategy fans and nostalgia hunters alike, this Definitive Edition more than earns its name.
