Suikoden I and II are all-time RPG classics, but this remaster collection doesn't quite do them the justice they deserve
Read full review ↗These are decent enough remasters, but not the outstanding ones these RPGs deserved.
Read full review ↗Konami's remasters make Suikoden I & II easy to own and play. That's all they needed to do.
Read full review ↗Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars combine two incredible JRPGs from the genre's golden age on PS1, lovingly remastered and improved for PS5 and PS4. They suffer from the same issues many games did back in the day: unwieldy, occasionally grindy, and sometimes obtuse. Still, the package offers fans the chance to experience these lesser-known gems, and both deserve a place in the collection of any fan, even the least bit interested.
Read full review ↗While not as feature-rich as some collections, Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars proves that these RPGs have largely stood the test of time. While the issues with this remaster don't take away too much from the original games' brilliance, we think these classics deserve the very best. Boasting ambition, narrative stakes, and heart that few other RPGs of the time can muster, Suikoden burns bright in its origins, and we hope Konami sees just how important this series is to many and makes a handful of tweaks.

Read full review ↗Suikoden I & II shine even more brightly here than they have for over 25 years. Plus, building up your base is still a blast, and I got the same dopamine hit every time I added someone to my army.
Read full review ↗Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is an excellent update to the first two entries in the series, enhancing their timeless appeal with improved visuals that breathe new life into the Scarlet Moon Empire and the City-States of Jowstone, along with an improved English localization. While a few additional quality-of-life features would have been welcome, the excellent, thought-provoking stories and charming cast make this collection a must-have for both newcomers and longtime fans. It took decades for Suikoden to make a proper return, but Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars was well worth the long wait.

Read full review ↗Being able to get your hands on a game that has left its mark on several generations and the industry is always a privilege. Despite not having had the chance to play it back in the day, getting to play an improved version is wonderful. However, the additional content is rather thin, and if you're a long-time fan, you're bound to be disappointed. Nostalgia is all well and good, but it still needs to be justified. Fortunately, the price is reasonable overall, and of course, there are hours of gameplay to be had. Suikoden and Konami aren't revolutionizing anything this time around. Some will find it worthwhile, others won't. But don't miss out on the chance to experience these incredible adventures!
