Sunderfolk isn't great if you play it on your own, but the experience with friends is fantastic and memorable.

Even the parts of the game that feel subpar, like the mundane story, can still be a net positive simply through the power of friendship. Whether folks come together through a weekly game night or through a short session on Discord, Sunderfolk's bold ideas shine through and will hopefully set the stage for more exciting campaigns down the road.

Sunderfolk was not only what I needed right now but it executes everything with quality and precision. What it does with the app and multiplayer is sublime and everything about the gameplay experience is explained, trimmed to perfection and thoughtful. From the explanation of its keywords to its simplified systems, this is a dungeon crawler for everyone.

Sunderfolk is a tactical co-op RPG from Secret Door. You play in the world of the Sunderlands, where you fight together against the threat of the Shadowstone. The game uses your phone or tablet as a controller, which provides clear controls, slightly different than normal. You use cards to perform attacks and spells, which makes the game strategic and varied. The One Shot Mode lets you play short, individual missions. Thanks to the beautiful design and fun controls, Sunderfolk is really a special video game. It is truly a great combination of a video game and a board game. Fun to play alone, but best together with your friends!

Sunderfolk’s attempt at bringing the tabletop RPG experience to the living room TV screen is difficult to find fault with. Its clever use of mobile devices does a great job at capturing the tactile nature of true tabletop gaming, resulting in a surprisingly faithful adaptation of the full game night experience. The story may be a little generic, and the standard difficulty option may be a little undertuned, relative to how successful Sunderfolk is in achieving its vision elsewhere. For anyone, like me, who struggles to find the time or motivation to unpack their favourite tabletop behemoth and endure the inevitable setup and breaking down phase, Sunderfolk is a truly wonderful alternative that works better than it has any right to.

Sunderfolk is like an unassuming rose among thorns. It’s a beautiful, laid-back, simple, cheerful, colorful, and effortless game that you can spend as much time as you want playing—especially with your friends. Its main charm lies in its atmosphere and the way the game connects through your phone. That’s the magic I’ve been talking about all along. Besides, who doesn’t love a good battle and setting off on a fun-filled adventure with friends?

A highly enjoyable and entertaining multiplayer game that I would strongly recommend to fans of turn-based strategy and tabletop RPGs. Unfortunately, it doesn't have enough features for me to recommend it to those who don't already enjoy the genre.

For newcomers, it's a perfect on-ramp, but others who dislike slow campaigns might not be convinced. It's inexpensive at $50, needing only one purchase for a group of four, and it's a great excuse for a weekly game night because of its couch co-op focus. Sunderfolk is a must-play game for you and your friends, whether you play it locally or online.

Sunderfolk is a standout debut from Secret Door-an overlooked gem with a strong, nostalgic multiplayer concept rooted in strategy and social play, offering a unique adventure that's well worth your time, as long as you're open to playing on a smartphone.
