Why play it

Survive and thrive in a post-apocalyptic future - resources are scarce but opportunity calls. Build the ultimate disaster proof colony, protect your colonists and restore civilization to a devastated world. Remember: The end of the world is just the beginning. Build and manage a colony of survivors after a world-ending event. Construct more than 50 unique buildings to handle everything from resource collection and farming to exploration and security. Don’t forget to construct the Gate to venture into the savage world beyond your colony.

Story and worldbuilding

Build and manage a colony of survivors after a world-ending event. Construct more than 61 unique buildings to handle everything from resource collection and farming to exploration and security. Explore a vast procedurally generated world featuring six different biomes filled with resources, wildlife, rival societies and more. Each environment has different conditions that affect your colony’s survival. Stay vigilant: Natural disasters, dangerous animals, and bandits will put your survivors to the test. Recruit over 80 unique Specialists, each with their own skills and motivations, to manage your colony’s resources and production. Send them beyond the Gate on scientific missions, scavenger runs, and to fight bandits. Life in the aftermath requires you to make moral choices. You may not be able to control everything in your colony, but how you respond to situations and emergent events will shape the character of your new civilization. Every decision can have dire consequences on your colony’s survival. Your reputation with other societies will affect your ability to trade and can even affect your relationship with their leaders. Colonists have a mind of their own and will react to your choices. Fortify your gates and protect your colony from rampaging animals and deadly bandits. Enemies who breach the gate will pour into your colony, wreaking havoc on everything in their wake. Take command of your specialists and drive the invaders back.

Surviving the Aftermath is a solid base game, with some questionable DLC. Core mechanics are well designed and while the game does have some issues, it offers just enough to make it worth picking up. There’s plenty to do and the game offers quite a bit of bang for your buck. My only issue, like with other players, lies with the DLC, which doesn’t quite integrate with the base game as well as it could have. Overall, this is a solid title with some interesting mechanics, and it’s well worth the price tag. I award Surviving the Aftermath the Thumb Culture Silver Award.

Unlike the usual copy and paste of surviving a post-apocalyptic world, the game is more focused on the individual survivors to come together and rebuild civilization from scratch. Since the platform of choice was to be on consoles, you’d have to be quite accustomed to exploring various menus and tabs with a controller to fully enjoy the experience. While the exploration segment may feel repetitive and unproductive, the immersive atmosphere that puts you up against responsibility was how it allows the players to stay concentrated.

‎Surviving the Aftermath is a building and management game with some RPG elements that work with more or less success, but that ‎‎together create a really fun game,‎‎and above‎‎ all, addictive;‎‎ And as I said before, you know when you start playing but not when you finish. There are certain elements such as graphics and combat that could be much better, but that are compensated by‎‎ a very addictive gameplay,‎‎a huge variety of constructions available and an extensive tree of technologies to investigate.‎

There's a lot to like about Surviving the Aftermath and I became genuinely invested in the continued existence of my survivors, fighting and struggling with all I had to get them through the many hardships of living in a post-apocalyptic world. It's unfortunate that I was constantly forced to return to exploring the turn based world map, rather than having fun building stuff. Also, if you do decide to pick up Surviving the Aftermath, it's probably best to go for the PC version to avoid the contradictory brain-melting console controls.

Surviving the Aftermath is a real-time strategy title. We will have to develop a new civilization from scratch, fighting against enemies and natural catastrophes such as radioactive fallout while fighting for our survival.

Surviving the Aftermath doesn't utilize its dire post-apocalyptic setting as well as it could have, but those looking for an addictive, mechanically dense city builder/management sim will find a lot of enjoyment here.

In Surviving the Aftermath, players need to build a sustainable colony similar to Endzone: A World Apart. The storyline gives players a goal to work towards as they explore the world map and enhance their colony. Aside from the ineffective tutorial and tips section of the game, players can expect a fun city-building survival experience. At its core, Surviving the Aftermath is a high-stakes building game where the biggest challenge is making the right decisions in order to stay alive in a dangerous, apocalyptic world.
